The Grove, former home of the Earls of Clarendon, now a smart 5-star hotel only 18 miles from London with exclusive CountryClubuk Members’ rates

The Grove has earned a great reputation for giving its guests a luxurious country-house hotel stay within striking distance of London. Once the stately home of the Earls of Clarendon, The Grove has achieved new life without losing its former grandeur. From its stylish, airy rooms to its large spa and pools, restaurants serving delicious cuisines, contemporary artworks and urban beach, The Grove offers relaxation in some style. And with 300 acres of well-tended gardens, championship golf course, woodlands, wetlands, rolling hills and the Grand Union Canal, it conveys the illusion of a spacious and relaxed country-house retreat despite being within the M25.

The Grove was the Clarendons’ (whose family name is Villiers) main home from 1753 to 1923, and numbered among its occupants a Chancellor of the Exchequer, a Lord Privy Seal, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, President of the Board of Trade and Lord Lieutenant of Ireland,  a Governor-General of South Africa and career politicians of both the Liberal and Conservative persuasion, making The Grove in its heyday as a family estate a hotbed of political debate and luxurious living, entertaining statesmen and Royalty from across the world. Today, beautifully restored, the ultra-comfortable mansion house has an additional West Wing to extend the hospitality.

Five categories of room and three of suites combine five-star comforts and elegant furnishings with high-tech details such as plasma-screen TVs and Bose iPod docks. Marble bathrooms offer luxurious ESPA products. Room categories start in the West Wing with the Superior and Deluxe—some with a balcony—and inside the 18th-century mansion house are large, high-ceilinged rooms and suites, the most magnificent of which is the lavish Presidential Suite. There are several Family rooms to suit all ages and numbers, as well as inter-connecting rooms.

The Glasshouse is the main restaurant—filled with light as you might expect—and serving delicious and fresh cuisine under the eye of  Executive Chef Stephen Wheeler, who is passionate about serving the freshest culinary creations. A second restaurant, The Stables, suits the more casual diner. Both restaurants have attractive bars alongside, serving intriguing ‘garden to glass’ cocktails among other refreshing drinks. Much of the produce for both restaurants and bars, and for the 24-hour room service, comes straight from The Grove’s own gardens.

With its immaculate greens and stunning views of the Hertfordshire countryside, The Grove’s 7,152-yard course is ranked one of the top 100 courses in the UK and Ireland. Designed by Kyle Phillips, this beautifully laid-out course flows naturally across mature parkland. It played host to the WGC-American Express Championship won by Tiger Woods in 2006 as well as the 2016 British Masters. It is an immaculately conditioned parkland course with excellent bunkering and a wide variety of features such as tight doglegs, demanding carries over water and inviting drives from elevated tees. The 3rd, with its approach over ‘Hell’s Lake’, is a real test of nerve. All in all, it’s a superb-beautifully-maintained course—and without club members you can simply ‘pay and play’, adding excellent coaching if you wish.

Guests have plenty to do. The Grove’s hidden gem is an enchanting Walled Garden, a quirky haven complete with a private beach, outdoor heated pool and tennis and volleyball courts. The award-winning Sequoia spa, with its mosaic-tiled pool, heat experience rooms and specialist treatment options, creates a whole new world of relaxation and recuperation with its array of treatment rooms, hydrotherapy pools, hammam and sauna. Beyond the golf are tennis courts, croquet lawn, laser clay pigeon shooting, falconry in the woods, Segways and bikes to ride, fitness classes, and strolls everywhere from the gardens to the canal side, woodlands and hills—taking a gourmet picnic with you, if you wish.
