The Chesterfield is indeed a choice venue, with a fascinating history as well as a luxurious present. Among former residents were that fierce old cavalier Lord Berkeley of Stratton, supporter of Charles II in the Civil War, as well as the Earl of Tankerville, MP, cricketer and natural historian—and Major James Cunningham, one of a small but heroic band who, against all odds, managed to shut the outer gate of the farmhouse at La Haye Saint in the Battle of Waterloo—thus prompting his wife to remark that he was ‘the first and last Cunningham ever to shut a door’. Among the procession of noblemen, soldiers and statesmen were Lord Petersham, Regency dandy, the Earl of Carnarvon and, in 1900, Sir William Harcourt, infamous as the Chancellor of the Exchequer who introduced death duties into the British tax system.

Moving quickly on — the Chesterfield Hotel is a veritable oasis of good sense, classical elegance and luxurious hospitality, from the impeccable top-hatted doormen at its canopied entrance, throughout the stately leather, polished mahogany and silks of the large and airy foyer, living rooms, a fine restaurant, excellent bar and library, and on into the richly appointed bedrooms and suites. The Chesterfield believes in stylish discretion and bonhomie. It is ranked four star, but in our view, and those of the critics, it behaves like a five-star.
