Sopwell House, a striking whitewashed Georgian manor house spa hotel set in gardens in the peaceful Hertfordshire countryside just 40 minutes from London: exclusive CountryClubuk Members’ rates

Set in peaceful Hertfordshire countryside outside St Albans, yet only 40 minutes’ drive from London, Sopwell House is a striking whitewashed Georgian country manor house dating back to 1603. Once the family home of tthe Mountbattens—HRH the Duke of Edinburgh’s family—clues to the history still abound within this popular country-house spa hotel. It is an ideal base from which to tour an intriguing part of England—it is thought that King Henry VIII married Anne Boleyn in the nearby nunnery.

From this comfortable oasis today’s guests can explore a fascinating and vivid scene within miles of charming, peaceful countryside. Nearby are the bustling market town of St Albans, historic Hatfield House and Knebworth House, and a wealth of sites including Roman ruins such as the Six Hills Barrows and Verulamium, cultural institutions such as the Natural History Museum at Tring—and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London in nearby Leavesden showcases filmmaking history.

Back at the hotel, guests can stroll through 12 acres of gardens and enjoy spacious and elegantly decorated interiors which combine period features and a fresh contemporary air—together with a newly designed destination spa and health club.

There are 128 bedrooms and suites, varying in size and design depending on whether you are in the old part of the manor house or the new. All have a boutique feel with views over the gardens or surrounding countryside, king-size beds, Elemis products, feature wallpaper and comfortable armchairs. Categories start at Deluxe, followed by Executive, the Junior Suite which sleeps up to three, and the Corner Suite which accommodates up to four (two adults and two children).

Sixteen gated Mews Suites in four different categories including duplex, all set in a landscaped garden created by RHS Chelsea Gold award winner Ann-Marie Powell, are stylish oases with their own private atmosphere, hot tubs and extras such as fireplace, Nespresso machines, minibars and complimentary access to the Cottonmill Club.

For dining, choose between the two AA Rosette restaurant serving modern British cuisine and an informal brasserie, a conservatory bar and cocktail lounge. Breakfast is an ample selection of pastries, hams, cheeses, smoked salmon, yogurts, nuts and fruits and full English.

As to health and fitness, Sopwell House boasts the newly built landscaped Cottonmill Spa, in which you can swim in a 20-yard pool with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the grounds, surrounded by poolside relaxation areas, a gym and fitness studio, steam room, two vitality pools and a sauna. Indulge yourself at the spa with specialist Vichy Shower or Quartz Sand Bed treatments; plus expert massages, facials, and holistic therapies. Guests have access to the spa facilities free of charge, and to the Cottonmill Club for an additional fee. Cottonmill Spa and all facilities are adults-only.
