It is time for a new jacket with more heft and a lot more character, yet still smooth and elegant—and when this jacket by Magee of Donegal fits the bill. It combines high-quality tailoring, silky Irish lambswool tweed, classic herringbone pattern, rich history and the colours of the Irish countryside. The overall effect is extremely elegant: it is warm, soft and comfortable, without being bulky.
The fine herringbone tweed is a medium weight at 360g (12 ½ oz) and a lovely shade of brown, with rust and mid blue in the overcheck. It looks good with just about everything in the wardrobe, from beiges, tans and browns to blues, reds and greens, making it very easy to wear. Furthermore, it is beautifully tailored and hand finished on the lapels and the lining, so it looks and feels made to measure.
The cut is a flattering two-button style, with two side vents, two straight front pockets, flapped and jetted, and angled breast welt pocket. It is fully lined in rust satin and has four interior pockets, one buttoned for security. Sizes and fittings: Regular fitting in 38in and 40in chest.

The critical things to get right are the three c’s—cut, construction and cloth. The resulting jacket just looks good: close to the body, slim but not tight, no sagging shoulders nor bagginess. It was Beau Brummell who worked with the English fine cloth makers and tailors of London, setting rules in suit construction which still pertain. Hand stitching is a mark of quality; around the lapels, for example, it creates the perfect ‘roll’ to ensure the lapels lie flat. The more hand stitching, the better, important even when unseen, such as in the lining. The collar needs a felt lining to stabilise its line.
