Everything about this beautiful new tweed jacket from Magee in Ireland is elegant, from the flattering cut to the feel of the handwoven Donegal cloth and the elegant shades of grey in the herringbone; you can see from the picture what a lovely jacket it is, and the quality feel of it matches the appearance.
Magee are master tailors, specialists in making the finest wool tweeds since the 1800s and famous worldwide. It is no surprise therefore that we have seen the same jacket in Gentleman’s London for over £400: through CountryClubuk it is less than half that price of course.
Beautifully tailored in smooth pure wool herringbone tweed of a good medium weight (425g), it is perfect to wear in town or country: just the jacket to impress the inlaws for Sunday lunch—and to secure the best rooms and tables during country weekends.
The attractive soft greys also make it extremely versatile. It looks super with a white, blue or black polo or shirt, with reds, purples, greys and greens, plain or checks, and also with trousers ranging from classic chinos to cavalry twills, moleskins and cords.
Apart from the fine, smooth Irish Donegal tweed, what sets this jacket apart is the superb cut, attention to detail in the tailoring, and the hand finishing: hand stitching on the collar—that touch of class which improves the lie of the lapels—on the buttonholes and the lining, all denoting high-quality tailoring.
It is cut in single-breasted, two-button style, with side vents, and has two straight flapped and jetted front pockets, breast welt pocket, lapel buttonhole, four-button sleeves and four interior pockets within the purple silky lining, one buttoned for security. It is finished with the signature Magee 1866 wolfhound pin.

The critical things to get right are the three c’s—cut, construction and cloth. The resulting jacket just looks good: close to the body, slim but not tight, no sagging shoulders nor bagginess. It was Beau Brummell who worked with the English fine cloth makers and tailors of London, setting rules in suit construction which still pertain. Hand stitching is a mark of quality; around the lapels, for example, it creates the perfect ‘roll’ to ensure the lapels lie flat. The more hand stitching, the better, important even when unseen, such as in the lining. The collar needs a felt lining to stabilise its line.
