The hotel’s story stretches back to the 16th century, during the golden age of the Republic. Originally an inn known as the Locanda Cappello Nero serving merchants and travellers in the bustling Mercerie district, the property has welcomed guests in one form or another for nearly five centuries. Two beautifully united historic townhouses now form this intimate sanctuary, with traces of its humble yet hospitable past still visible in the succession of small Levantine-style parlours that greet you in the lobby.Arrive by water taxi and you’ll glide straight to the private dock on the canal – a wonderfully civilised welcome that sets the tone for everything that follows. The rosy façade and light-filled interiors feel instantly inviting: think soaring glass atrium, rich colours, precious damask fabrics and a subtle palette of silver, brown and lilac that pays graceful homage to Venice’s historic textile tradition.
