Sapphires are considered the ‘heavenly gem’—symbols of love and loyalty—and Ceylon (now of course Sri Lanka) is where most of the world’s finest sapphires are mined. The blue sapphire in the Royal engagement ring was mined only metres from where this particular sapphire was mined. The Ceylon sapphire is particularly desirable for its colour and clarity—and this sapphire epitomises it. Not only is the stone flawless to the naked eye—as are the diamonds which highlight its blue beauty—it is a beautiful, bright, typical Ceylon sapphire blue.
The natural blue sapphire is 2.99 carats, round brilliant cut, claw set, and set with .27 carats of brilliant cut diamonds, VS in quality and F in colour, in 18ct white gold. The craftsmanship, all done by hand, from the cutting of the stone to the creation of the gold setting and the final polishing, is superb.
