We are delighted to invite you to attend the CountryClubuk Champagne Charity Reception at the House of Lords on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, hosted by the Lord Mancroft. Plans have now been finalised—this will be a high-profile, memorable event, as well as entertaining, and it has an important underlying purpose.
The charity to benefit is the Atlantic Salmon Trust, which is at the forefront of scientific work that has recently led the King Charles III Charitable Fund to give significant support. The battle to save the wild Atlantic salmon and its environment is ongoing, yet now there is new urgency—and new impetus and energy already achieving results.
The wild Atlantic salmon has been classified as endangered in the UK—and it is now known that they are an indicator species for the health of the wider environment—the ‘canary in the coalmine’. The goal now is to restore the environment—and to put the case for action to the Parliamentarians, MPs and Lords, who are attending.
Many famous names will be among your fellow guests at this event, including Michael (now Lord) Forsyth, former Secretary of State for Scotland, and Robbie (Lord) Douglas-Miller, Under-Secretary of State for Biosecurity, Animal Health and Welfare in the last Conservative Government.
A short, fascinating film on the wild Atlantic salmon and their UK river habitat will feature actors Dominic West and Jim Murray, who played respectively King Charles and Prince Andrew in ‘The Crown’, and who are now adding their weight to this environmental cause.
The Lord Mancroft will host this Reception, welcoming guests to the House of Lords overlooking the River Thames—an apposite venue in which to discuss the current health and restoration of wild salmon and UK rivers.
Francis Fulford, Devon landowner, journalist, columnist, author and TV personality, whose forebear Sir Francis Fulford was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons in 1625, will be among our speakers.
The Atlantic Salmon Trust, led by CEO Mark Bilsby, will sum up the mission to halt and reverse the decline in wild Atlantic salmon through science and action, announcing news of exciting new developments and findings—and there will be opportunity for our Guests and the Press to ask questions of the AST scientists and VIPs about their work and about wild salmon prospects—which they say are ‘far from doom and gloom’.
The Cholmondeley Room will itself be an historic venue which we can enjoy. It is rich with original designs by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin, architects of much of the Palace of Westminster still standing today. Royal coats of arms line the walls, from William the Conqueror to Queen Victoria. The Terrace overlooking the River Thames is also an enjoyable location, and a fitting backdrop for the event.
Champagne will be served on arrival, followed by hot and cold canapés, with House of Lords wines and soft drinks. We much hope to see you there, and you are most welcome to invite your personal guests. Proceeds will help fund the work of the Atlantic Salmon Trust which we shall hear about during the event.
A specimen of the personalised invitation which you will receive when you have booked your tickets appears above (and which you and your guests will bring to the House of Lords along with photo ID as part of the security protocol on arrival at the event, which is timed for 6pm).
The date is Tuesday, October 15, 2024, the timing is 6.30pm to 8.30pm, and tickets are priced at just £139. The dress code is smart (lounge suits for the men and equivalent attire for the ladies).
