The Villa & Palazzo Aminta is the elegant former family palazzo of the Admiral of the Italian Navy, Francesco Capece, and is now one of the Leading Hotels of the World as well as our hand-picked five-star hotel in Stresa, the small, sleepy Italian town on lovely Lake Maggiore.

Villa & Palazzo Aminta stands in a quiet location on the lakeside at Stresa, with its own private beach and pier jutting out into the glassy blue water. It is the perfect place to experience the full sense of just how impressive are the surroundings of this magnificent lake. You can take a boat straight out from the pier to explore the lake’s romantic islands, swim or water ski, or simply relax in style on the sun terrace, on the beach and in the beautiful Italian gardens.

Elegantly Venetian in décor, with an Eastern influence, the 54 guest rooms and 13 suites have stunning views of either the lake or the gardens, and many have a balcony. The interiors are sunlit and graceful, filled with archways and frescoes, Murano glass chandeliers, antiques and silk wallpapers and the guest rooms are equipped with goosedown feather beds, Jacuzzis, high-speed Internet and Etro toiletries.

For further relaxation, the luxurious full-service Grotta di Palazzo Aminta Beauty & Spa features a Turkish bath, a hot tub and a variety of massages and beauty treatments. There are two restaurants, I Mori, serving local and international dishes at lunch and dinner, and Le Isole, serving local Italian cuisine.

Villa Aminta’s famous guests have included George Bernard Shaw, a private guest of the Admiral, and Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who visited in 1966. It is still privately owned, since 2000 by the Zanetta family, who have restored the villa to its original splendour.

When you feel like exploring, catch a cable car up to Mount Mottarone, or hop on a boat across to Isola dei Pescatori. At 5,000ft, Mottarone is a truly awe-inspiring viewing platform looking out across the expanse of Maggiore and its neighbouring lakes, at the endless snow-topped peaks of the Alps and back down towards the wide open Lombard plains.

The nearby Isola dei Pescatori (Fisherman’s Island) is another favourite; take the short trip out from Stresa’s harbour at breakfast time and you should comfortably beat any crowds and enjoy the place pretty much to yourself (bar the occasional fisherman and all those cats).
