Gythion, Greece; Sat Oct 4, Santorini, Greece; Sun Oct 5, Athens.
Boarding Grandeur, we shall sail on the evening tide, leaving the Spanish city behind us as we enjoy the finale to our day, wining and dining in the excellent gourmet restaurants, finishing perhaps with a nightcap on the balcony of our private suite as Seven Seas Grandeur sails through the night. As dawn breaks we shall glimpse the first of our spectacular ports of call, Toulon, from where we can explore everything from the riches of St Tropez to Aix en Provence to Cassis, icon of the Côte d’Azur, La Cadiere d’Azur, the vineyards of the Bandol region and so much more. This is a stunningly beautiful opening to the cruise which lies ahead. And we sail on from Toulon to Livorno—and more delights including the wonders of Florence and the Italian Renaissance.
From Livorno, Tuscany, we can do so much: explore the most emblematic and historical sites of Florence, with art treasures from the heart of the Italian Renaissance—a curated path designed to show the best Florence has to offer; or focus on Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery; or taste the wines of a Super Tuscan estate; or the gracious city of Siena and tower-studded San Gimignano; Lucca or Pisa; or gain an insider’s view into the life of Andrea Bocelli, recording a song at his studio, sampling wines at his family’s vineyard, dining at his restaurant and touring his outdoor amphitheatre; or discover the Ligurian coast by boat; the pleasures are many!
After an evening of six-star luxury aboard Grandeur we sail on to Rome. Whether enjoying the street performers at the Spanish Steps and people-watching over a fine glass of wine in colourful Trastevere, or taking in the historical and architectural glory that is Rome, visitors are spoiled for choice in this truly Eternal City. St. Peter’s Basilica is a full-day visit, featuring the Sistine Chapel and panoramic city vistas for those willing to climb to the top of the dome. Other landmarks not to miss include the renowned Trevi Fountain, the Coliseum, and Aventine Hill, which provides a grand view of the imposing remains of the Imperial Palaces and the Circus Maximus, of Ben Hur fame.
Sorrento, gateway to the Amalfi Coast, is surely one of the world’s most beautiful towns, built on a coast with breathtaking views and landscapes. Yet it is far from a frivolous holiday destination. The houses, people and the entire region are filled with a history and culture so deep that it can be traced back to the 11th century BC. Overlooking the Bay of Naples, the town is the key point on the Sorrentine Peninsula and is one of the most popular destinations of the entire Campania region. From here, make sure to plan a day trip to the Isle of Capri, one of the most celebrated Italian islands, noted for its natural beauty.
Next day will be spent cruising the Tyrrhenian Sea, leaving Italy, bound for Malta and Greece. This is a time for relaxation onboard Grandeur and really getting to know the many delights of this palatial six-star ship. Next morning we awake in Valletta, Malta’s major port and capital, the entire city a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
The centrepiece of Valletta is the impressive 19th century Mosta Dome, visible from anywhere on the island, with its inlaid marble floor and the gilded, carved stone flowers set around the interior dome. For a tranquil afternoon, stroll the San Anton Palace Gardens, artistically laid out in Three Villages – Attard, Lija and Balzan. Or, for spectacular vistas, take a day tour to Dingli Cliffs, which offer striking views of the sea and rugged coastline. Valetta is also a portal to day trips to nearby Mdina, with its landmark Baroque Cathedral of St. John; and Rabat, the provincial township that was once part of the Roman city of Melita, where you can explore several fascinating archaeological digs. Malta is our gateay to Greece, and as dawn breaks the following morning we shall find ourselves waking up to the charms of Argostoli.
Argostoli is a delight: a turquoise bay along the sides of white limestone hills with colourful fishing boats, vibrant open-air market and relaxing atmosphere. It’s full of history, naturally. Visit the archaeological museum and explore the rich artifacts of the Mycenean culture. See the Venetian-built St Georges Castle dating from the 16th century in the nearby village of Kastro. Stroll through Vallianos Square in Argostoli browsing the stalls and shops to take home the island’s produce, including thyme honey, leather, and the excellent local white wine, the famous Robola Taoussi. But the luxury of Grandeur awaits us, and we shall wine and dine the night away, enjoying her unrivalled amount of space at sea as we sail on to sun-blessed Gythion, a glittering jewel on the Greek coast, once the seaport of Sparta.
Gythion welcomes visitors with a beautiful coastline and white sand beaches—and also the antiquities of its past. Near the entrance of the city is the Theatre, which still houses the ruins of the Temple of Athena and the Gates of Castorides. The Archaeological Museum of Gythion has a vast collection which includes finds from excavations of the many ancient sites throughout the city. Be sure to enjoy a delicious seafood lunch al fresco in a traditional ouzerie.
Santorini, this most picture-perfect of Greek islands, is steeped in Greek lore. According to Mythology, Santorini Island was initially created from a clod of earth thrown to the sea by Euphemus, son of Poseidon, who dreamed one night that he made love to a nymph, the daughter of Triton, also son of Poseidon and the Goddess of Beauty and Love, Aphrodite. Today, this island is one of the world’s most adored destinations due to its stunning setting. With dramatic views of the caldera and the classic whitewashed houses topped with their famous blue domes, clinging perilously to the side of the mountain, and stunning beaches of white and red sand or black pebbles, it’s no wonder this is among the most photographed scenery in the world.
Visit Ancient Akrotiri, the archeological site of a town frozen in time by ash from an eruption 3,600 years ago. Also worth a day trip is the Volcano of Santorini Palea (old) Kameni and Nea (new) Kameni, two small islands of black lava positioned in the centre of the basin of Santorini.. All these and more are here to be explored, remembering that you can choose from up to 80 free excursions! Santorini is a spectacular port of call and we shall be inspired as we return to Grandeur for another relaxing evening before our final destination—Athens.
Magnificent Athens will be a fitting culmination of our spectacular cruise, which finally must end as we disembark for the journey home—or we can extend the pleasures of this amazing trip by staying on in Athens for a night or more—creating a truly tailor-made finale. An historian’s delight, Athens is of course home to such magnificent wonders as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the atmospheric winding streets of the Plaka, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Temple of Athena Nike, as well as the Archaeological Museum with the world’s finest collection of ancient artifacts. We can if we wish be hosted on guided tours of these famous sites, or stroll around Athens and enjoy the ambience, the restaurants and the shops.
