CountryClubuk Members are delighted to receive an exclusive invitation to the Private View of the landmark exhibition Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.
This is the largest and most comprehensive display of the late Queen’s fashion ever mounted—marking the centenary of her birth in 1926.
Featuring approximately 200 items—many shown for the first time—this unmissable exhibition charts Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable style across all ten decades of her life: from childhood couture to regal ball gowns, off-duty Balmoral tweeds and tartan skirts to diplomatic ensembles that subtly referenced host nations through colour, motif, and symbolism.
Highlights include her 1934 bridesmaid dress by Edward Molyneux, the 1947 wedding dress and 1953 Coronation gown by Norman Hartnell, the transparent Hardy Amies raincoat of the 1960s, vibrant patterned silks by Hardy Amies and Ian Thomas, and a stunning array of heirloom jewellery such as Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara, the Baring Ruby Necklace, and Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Brooch.
Alongside the clothing, hats, shoes, and accessories, explore never-before-seen design sketches, fabric samples, and handwritten correspondence that reveal the Queen’s hands-on role in her wardrobe—insisting on practical details like weighted hems, hidden pockets, and crease-resistant fabrics. As curator Caroline de Guitaut notes: ‘In the year that she would have turned 100 years old, this exhibition will be a celebration of Queen Elizabeth’s uniquely British style and her enduring fashion legacy.’
The exhibition humanises Her late Majesty through anecdotes of frugality (repairing favourites rather than replacing them), visual diplomacy (shamrock details for Ireland, maple-leaf reds for Canada), and her famous belief that she must be ‘seen to be believed’—hence the vivid colours and strategic brooch placement during walkabouts.
