The Grand Hotel York, best rates for this, Yorkshire’s only five-star hotel: Edwardian splendour, contemporary comfort and style in the heart of the beautiful and historic City of York

If you could choose a perfect place to stay in the beautiful and historic city of York, The Grand would be it. Standing resplendent by the mediaeval Bar walls, within walking distance of the Minster and the railway station, The Grand is well named—an historic work of art in its own right, Grade II Listed and offering top-notch service, luxurious guest rooms, excellent dining, a spa and pool. It is also Yorkshire’s only AA five-star rated hotel and it has one of the finest locations in the city. Stroll to the cathedral for a choral service, or along the Bar walls, or through York’s mediaeval streets before breakfast, or after an evening at the theatre, a concert, late coffee or jazz—York’s delights do not end when the sun goes down—and you are always just minutes from the comforts of your luxurious hotel.

There is good reason for this location, and for its grand style. The Grand, an enchanting Edwardian brick heritage building, was the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway Company in its glory days and the resplendent, graceful building, one of York’s most iconic, is filled with history and historic details—updated now in a multi-million pound transformation to create a fine hotel second to none in Yorkshire. Originally constructed in 1906 as a ‘Palace of Business’ for what was then one of the most powerful public companies in the country, today it is the region’s leading luxury hotel and has established a global reputation for first-class service, stylish bedrooms, a sumptuous subterranean spa and a unique historic atmosphere.

From its Edwardian exterior to the spacious interiors the Grand is luxurious in style, with architect-designed interiors offering great comfort and first-class facilities. Original features such as parquet floors, wide arched corridors, imposing solid mahogany doors, Art Nouveau ironwork and a sweeping stone staircase are blended with a rich colour palette and sumptuous velvet furnishings. It is all both spacious and enjoyably relaxed. The service is personal, warm and welcoming.

There are two dining rooms, the smart Hudsons and the relaxed The Rise, both serving excellent food with a Yorkshire relish. The intimate 1906 Bar, named after the date of the building itself, offers everything from local beer to contemporary cocktails, to a gin menu—and a whisky selection featuring 110 bottlings from across the world. Breakfast is generous and good.

The Grand’s stylish and modern bedrooms, 207 of them located over six floors, are also generous in size—even the entry-level Classic room has plenty of space, and bathrooms feature marble tubs as well as showers. They are well designed (with Nespresso machines in Executive and above). Suite guests have access to the White Rose Lounge—other guests can pay for day access.

The subterranean full-treatment spa lies in the old vaults, its decor reflecting York’s Roman origins—its Roman name is Eboracum. Facilities include a 20-yard pool, a Nordic dry sauna, herbal steam room, spa whirlpool and treatment rooms using ESPA products. There is also a modern fitness centre, the complimentary use of which is open to guests staying in all rooms.
