This zebra tie is a particular favourite of King Charles III, who has often been pictured wearing it at Royal events in the UK and internationally—among the highlights of his outings sporting it was his joyous appearance at the Epsom Derby meeting, where his high spirits were epitomised by this eclectic pale blue silk tie.

Created by our silk art specialists Fox & Chave of Buckinghamshire—who are of course thrilled to add to the sartorial elegance of His Majesty—the design has an intriguing history. It derives from a painting by Ustad Mansur, 17th century artist, naturalist and leading Mughal Court painter, of a zebra presented to the Mughal Emperor Jahangir (1569-1627) by Mir Ja’far, who had acquired it from Turks travelling from Ethiopia. Nobody in India having seen a zebra before, it was described on the painting by Jahangir himself as a ‘mule’.

The zebra was shown to Jahangir at the Persian New Year festival of Nowruz in 1621, and when he was certain it wasn’t a mule, or a horse which somebody had painted stripes upon, he offered it as a gift to Shah Abbas of Iran, with whom he often exchanged exotics.

All of which makes this a silk tie of rare distinction, which one would expect to captivate the King, and likely others of our Members with a penchant for elegance, fine art, history and royalty combined, and who are also invited to order the King’s tie for themselves and their friends as it makes an unusual and creative gift. It is a repeating pattern of the single zebra on a pale blue ground in pure silk, hand finished, and it looks extremely smart worn as HM the King usually wears it, with a grey city suit or morning dress.
