These new cufflinks by Martick Jewellery of Hatton Garden have a wild beauty—the sterling silver encases the gleaming black skin of a stingray. The skin is not smooth, as might be expected, but instead it is beautifully textured so it constantly catches the light. Any man would love them! They have the perfect understated elegance for all occasions, from the office to the opera, the races or a black tie dinner or ball, making them not only highly original but versatile.
Julie Martick founded her company in 1988, since when her collections have featured in designer shops including Harvey Nicholls, Joseph and Paul Smith. She uses traditional methods. Each piece of Martick silver has hours of handwork put into it, starting with the master patterns, the subsequent cire perdu castings, through to hand-soldering, finishing and polishing. She has used stingray for these cufflinks because it is by far the most durable leather on the planet, often referred to as ‘immortal’ and the ‘jewel of the sea’. Perhaps most famous for its use on Japanese sword handles, in Egypt it was found in the tombs of ancient Pharaohs used as armour, decoration and ornamental embellishment.
The Stingray Cufflinks are about half-an-inch square and fasten with chain and bar. They are hallmarked and arrive in a smart black presentation box lined with purple, making a handsome gift for your favourite man.
