TThe Night of The Iguana—and Champagne
Clive Owen is a Golden Globe-winning actor best known for his leading roles in films including Children Of Men, Sin City and Closer (nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). He will perform opposite Anna Gunn, well known for her role as Skyler in Breaking Bad, Lia Williams, whose roles include The Crown and Kiri, and Julian Glover (Game of Thrones). The play is directed by James Macdonald, whose recent West End hits include Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? with Imelda Staunton.
The film of this play memorably starred Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr. In the strange limbo of 1940, on a dilapidated hotel verandah perched high in a rainforest above the Mexican coast, a group of lost souls collide—a defrocked priest, the grieving widow who runs the hotel, a family of jubilant Nazis, and an itinerant artist with her 97-year-old poet grandfather. The result is an epic battle between flesh and spirit, captivity and freedom, art and faith—heightened by a tropical rain-storm.

A rare Champagne: La Grande Dame 2008
In London to launch the long awaited new vintage was Chef de Cave Dominique Demarville. He officially took over the reins at the end of 2008, hailed by Veuve Clicquot as a great vintage year. Demarville notes of the 2008 La Grande Dame, ‘A light, shimmering gold. With a high proportion of pinot noir, it finds a perfect balance between freshness and structure.’
Champagne connoisseur Tom Stevenson is excited by the vintage, awarding 19 (out of 20) and noting: ‘I was seduced by the texture, the long lees aging is obvious adding that layer of joy that gives some yeasty character but brings the richness to the mouthfeel which balances the bright acidity. Very bright fruit, yellow plums, lots of tropical notes like guava and pineapple, very clean and precise. On second taste I get more tangerine, nuts and redcurrants. The ending is long and dominated by a saline finish which brings great freshness to the end. Very good indeed with the hallmark Clicquot style blending perfectly in 2008. 19/20.’
Veuve Clicquot’s suggested perfect pairings: ‘Start with a light seabass ceviche (see above—you have the perfect ingredients!) or fresh raw oysters.’ Of course this fine Champagne is wonderful served alone as an aperitif—the very finest of rare Champagnes to enhance your celebrations and give as a prized gift to your favourite people—each bottle lies in its own presentation box.
Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Blanc 2008 Champagne. Case of six bottles. Includes duty, VAT, individual gift boxes and UK mainland delivery. Code GD08LV01. RRP £762 plus delivery. CCUK £629. Free UK mainland delivery. Order six-bottle case of Veuve Clicquot La Grande Dame Blanc Vintage 2008.

Boxing Hares: new limited edition bronze
So alive, this new limited edition bronze of boxing hares by Michael Simpson is a large, vibrant sculpture which will captivate from across a room. A collector’s item, launched recently in a limited edition of 50 pieces worldwide, it is a substantial bronze which creates real impact in its pure beauty. It stands nearly 17in (44cm) tall, and weighs 5kg, making an impressive piece for a home interior, an office or boardroom, or a gallery setting.
Simpson, an international wildlife sculptor, has portrayed the two hares in mid-leap—one springing high above the other in a performance that is not only spectacular and balletic but entirely natural—and the hares are rapt in their aerobatics. To see boxing hares in spring—chasing and leaping in sheer abandon—is an unforgettable thrill, and this rare daylight spectacle is captured here in a split-second: truly a work of Art inspired by Nature.
This is a fine foundry bronze using the ancient method of lost wax casting, finished in the traditional way of patination, where various acids are fired into the surface of the sculpture to create layers of beautiful rich colours. Finally, this piece is picked out in subtle hand-painted poppies and wheat. It will arrive smartly boxed for presentation, with a numbered edition certificate. Code LH19RC10. RRP £1,495. CCUK £997. Peugeot silver Mignonette pepper and salt mills: a legacy in fine silver
Peugeot salt and pepper mills are celebrated worldwide—many great chefs will use no other—and this, the Mignonette silver mill, is the oldest of the company’s designs, the one that set them on the path to fame. It is simply beautiful, a genuine silversmith’s piece, covered entirely in silver. It carries the square grade one hallmark that is a guarantee of the highest level of silverplating recognised by French law.
Next to this, other mills pale into insignificance: it looks and feels what it is, a timeless and elegant classic: heavy in the hand, smooth and glowing. Not only will it enhance your table settings, both modern and traditional, it will continue to do so for ever, and be handed down to the next generation.
This makes it perfect as a wedding or anniversary present, and it is very suitable for engraving. Peugeot have made pepper, salt and coffee mills for longer than they have made cars, and the founding family still own the firm.
The Peugeot mechanism is the key component, the finely tooled heavy-grade processed steel being virtually indestructible. Not only this, but the fineness of the pepper or salt can be tuned to an exact preference: fine for delicate sauces, coarse for steaks etc—an epicure’s delight. Each mill is 4in tall (10cm), carries the French hallmark, and is packed in a smart presentation case.
