To see England play Wales at Twickenham in the run-up to the Rugby World Cup is a must-be-there event—both teams will be at the top of their game, focused on a win. TThe Night of The Iguana—and Champagne

The first new production of Tennessee Williams’ last great play ‘The Night Of The Iguana’ to arrive in London since 2005 is tempting Golden Globe winning actor Clive Owen back to the West End for the first time in 18 years. Clive Owen is a Golden Globe-winning actor best known for his leading roles in films including Children Of Men, Sin City and Closer (nominated for the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor). He will perform opposite Anna Gunn, well known for her role as Skyler in Breaking Bad, Lia Williams, whose roles include The Crown and Kiri, and Julian Glover (Game of Thrones). The play is directed by James Macdonald, whose recent West End hits include Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? with Imelda Staunton.

The film of this play memorably starred Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Deborah Kerr. In the strange limbo of 1940, on a dilapidated hotel verandah perched high in a rainforest above the Mexican coast, a group of lost souls collide—a defrocked priest, the grieving widow who runs the hotel, a family of jubilant Nazis, and an itinerant artist with her 97-year-old poet grandfather. The result is an epic battle between flesh and spirit, captivity and freedom, art and faith—heightened by a tropical rain-storm.

Sea-fresh wild line-caught sea bass

A rare Champagne: La Grande Dame 2008

Champagne connoisseurs are celebrating the release of what is being hailed the greatest Champagne vintage in living memory, the 2008: and Members having already snapped up cases of Dom Pérignon 2008, we are delighted now to see a rare Champagne from the 2008 vintage—Veuve Clicquot’s prestige cuvée La Grande Dame. And we are delighted to have secured not only an allocation of this Champagne, but an exclusive wholesale price.
La Grande Dame is an exceptionally rare Champagne—2008 is just the third vintage since 1998. Having waited nearly four years for a new vintage, the connoisseurs were particularly excited when the House finally announced its arrival. It is of course dedicated to one of the most influential women in Champagne’s history, Madame Clicquot, ‘The Great Lady’. Only Grand Cru vineyards go into the blend—five Pinot Noir and five Chardonnay.

In London to launch the long awaited new vintage was Chef de Cave Dominique Demarville. He officially took over the reins at the end of 2008, hailed by Veuve Clicquot as a great vintage year. Demarville notes of the 2008 La Grande Dame, ‘A light, shimmering gold. With a high proportion of pinot noir, it finds a perfect balance between freshness and structure.’

Champagne connoisseur Tom Stevenson is excited by the vintage, awarding 19 (out of 20) and noting: ‘I was seduced by the texture, the long lees aging is obvious adding that layer of joy that gives some yeasty character but brings the richness to the mouthfeel which balances the bright acidity. Very bright fruit, yellow plums, lots of tropical notes like guava and pineapple, very clean and precise. On second taste I get more tangerine, nuts and redcurrants. The ending is long and dominated by a saline finish which brings great freshness to the end. Very good indeed with the hallmark Clicquot style blending perfectly in 2008. 19/20.’

Veuve Clicquot’s suggested perfect pairings: ‘Start with a light seabass ceviche (see above—you have the perfect ingredients!) or fresh raw oysters.’ Of course this fine Champagne is wonderful served alone as an aperitif—the very finest of rare Champagnes to enhance your celebrations and give as a prized gift to your favourite people—each bottle lies in its own presentation box.

Boxing Hares: new limited edition bronze

Welsh Wagyu: the world’s most delicious beef steak burgers: only £38 for 20

Our Tasting Panel used to be rather toffee-nosed about burgers—but not after tasting Ifor’s Welsh Wagyu beef steak burgers. They are a surefire way to win celebrity status among family and friends at your next barbecue. Their extraordinary succulence, melt-in-the-mouth texture and a rich, buttery, meaty flavour that is not in the least fatty, ranks them as the best you will eat. The steak comes from Ifor Humphreys, owner and breeder of the first pure Wagyu herd in Wales. These Wagyu cattle are those which are prized in Japan as ‘national treasures’—and Ifor looks after them in similar style, feeding them four pints of beer a day from the local Monty’s Brewery, accompanied by an occasional massage. He keeps them largely grass-fed apart from their daily tipple, and the result is the ‘creme de la creme of beef’—wonderful in flavour and far too good for a mere burger: we tried them without the bread bun, just with salad and fries: they were delicious, better than many steaks.

Hand engraved Leaping Salmon Decanter and Two Tumblers in lead crystal by the famous Royal Brierley

The Leaping Salmon portrayed here on Royal Brierley’s lead crystal decanter and two tumblers by their master engraver Nick Davey is a superb depiction of sport and art. To own a hand engraved piece from this fine English crystal makers is to own a piece of British history. Royal Brierley is the longest established name in English crystal; founded in 1776 as a family business, its heritage spans three centuries and 15 generations. Its first Royal Warrant was bestowed by King George V in 1919 and has been renewed by each successive Monarch since. In 1985 the company was also granted the Warrant of HRH The Prince of Wales.

Smart men’s pure cotton classic summer chinos by English tailors Gurteen, a snip at £89 for two pairs

Here are the perfect chinos for our sartorially elegant Members. Peugeot silver Mignonette pepper and salt mills: a legacy in fine silver
