The Pelham is the perfect five-star South Kensington pad. A smart townhouse hotel in the salubrious end of town, it is ideal for Members who are culture vultures and/or ardent shoppers.
Fabulously feminine, distinctly English, elegant and original, The Pelham is a home from home—three townhouses in one—close enough to the Knightsbridge shops for our ladies to make their purchases at Harvey Nichols, Chanel, Armani and Harrods, then take in the V&A, the science museums and the Royal Albert Hall, then slipping back to The Pelham for afternoon tea or a glass of Champagne. Being opposite the South Ken Underground station, it is also easy for Kew, St James’s and Westminster, and of course a cab will take you anywhere.
The hotel was previously owned by Kit Kemp (of Charlotte Street Hotel and Soho), and retains this award-winning interior designer’s style—a bravura sense of colour and art. As such the interior is warm, intimate, detailed, ‘interior-designer’ London townhouse and not at all chintzy: Ab Fab without being outlandish.
In autumn and winter the open fire in the wood-panelled drawing-room with its honesty bar offers a welcome return from a walk in the chill night air. The library has deep scarlet seats and bookcases full of first editions. The bedrooms, mostly large, have grand high ceilings, unique chairs and curtains, thick carpets and oil paintings. The standard double, though diminutive, can prove as beautiful as the deluxe.
The Pelham wins high praise for its warm and welcoming staff too (their concierge is constantly singled out for special mention).
