Step into the boutique Gore Hotel, a two-minute walk from the Royal Albert Hall, and you will think you are in the private country home of an aristocratic family, eccentricities and all. This is no ‘corporate’ hotel—far from it. It breathes warmth and character from every wood panel, every doorknob and every slightly risqué picture on the wall. Lived in, loved; this is a home from home for Members who like their luxury with a large measure of individuality.
The Gore has been a fascinating hotel since 1892. Described as the most photographed, romantic hotel in London, it has been so beloved by some of its wealthy guests that they simply stayed on, and on . . . it is tempting to do so, to fall in love with, say, Lady Blessington (the room, not the lady herself), or Miss Fanny, Judy Garland or Dame Nellie.
There are other rooms, of course, a little more ‘standard’ yet still interestingly stylish. The 50 individually unique bedrooms range from Queen to the exquisite Deluxe Rooms to the signature Tudor Room.
The main drawing room, The Green Room, is actually a warm red, hung with period portraits and lined with good books. It is the perfect place to relax with a drink in front of the fire after a busy day—a civilised environment in which to meet friends or take coffee after a delicious dinner in the restaurant.
Speaking of food, The Gore has been noted for fine food since the 1950s when, in an atmosphere redolent of 16th century Hampton Court, 400 people a night dined off suckling pig and syllabub in the hotel’s Elizabethan Rooms. This is where the extraordinary chef Antony Worral-Thomson opened his original fine dining restaurant, 190 Queen’s Gate, which has now returned to glory under a dynamic Michelin-star French Chef, Daniel Galmiche, a renowned chef who makes regular appearances on the BBC and the national Press.
