We fly from the UK to Athens to be whisked to the famous Divani Apollon Palace & Thalasso Hotel. With its stunning seafront setting and private beach, this is one of the city’s most iconic hotels. Writes the Telegraph expert: ‘This serene hotel is the perfect pampering haven, fronting one of the finest beaches along Athens’ swanky Riviera. This elegant sanctuary also has one of the country’s best-equipped thalassotherapy spas, plus swimming pools and of course restaurants. And for us, a private Regent Seven Seas evening cocktail party welcomes us here, setting the scene, and the style, for three more days of delight in Athens.
Magnificent Athens is our gateway to the fascinations of the ancient world, known as the Cradle of Western Civilisation because of its immense impact on cultural and political achievements. An historian’s delight, Athens is of course home to such magnificent wonders as the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the atmospheric winding streets of the Plaka, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Temple of Athena Nike, as well as the Archaeological Museum with the world’s finest collection of ancient artifacts. We shall be hosted on guided tours of these famous sites, with also a tour of Cape Sounion for some of the most picturesque coastal viewpoints outside Athens, ending with sunset at the Temple of Poseidon. Between these visits we shall have time to relax and enjoy Divani Apollon Palace and its private beach, to stroll around Athens and enjoy the ambience, the restaurants and the shops.
Next day, on Wed April 30, we shall be driven to the port of Piraeus where our six-star cruise ship, Seven Seas Splendor, awaits us, ready to sail on the evening tide; after which our itinerary is: Thurs May 1, Santorini, Greece; Fri May 2, Rhodes, Greece; Sat May 3, Bodrum, Turkey; Sun May 4, Ephesus (Kusadasi), Turkey; Mon May 5, Cruising the Aegean Sea; Tue and Wed May 6 and 7, two days in Istanbul before we disembark.
Boarding Splendor, we shall set sail at 9pm, leaving the twinkling lights of Athens behind us as we enjoy the finale to our day, wining and dining in the excellent gourmet restaurants, finishing perhaps with a nightcap on the balcony of our private suite as Seven Seas Splendor sails through the night. As dawn breaks we shall glimpse the first of our sun-baked Greek islands, Santorini.
Santorini, this most picture-perfect of Greek islands, is steeped in Greek lore. According to Mythology, Santorini Island was initially created from a clod of earth thrown to the sea by Euphemus, son of Poseidon, who dreamed one night that he made love to a nymph, the daughter of Triton, also son of Poseidon and the Goddess of Beauty and Love, Aphrodite. Today, this island is one of the world’s most adored destinations due to its stunning setting. With dramatic views of the caldera and the classic whitewashed houses topped with their famous blue domes, clinging perilously to the side of the mountain, and stunning beaches of white and red sand or black pebbles, it’s no wonder this is among the most photographed scenery in the world.
Visit Ancient Akrotiri, the archeological site of a town frozen in time by ash from an eruption 3,600 years ago. Also worth a day trip is the Volcano of Santorini Palea (old) Kameni and Nea (new) Kameni, two small islands of black lava positioned in the centre of the basin of Santorini.. All these and more are here to be explored, remembering that you can choose from 45 free excursions!
And then there is Rhodes, where we can enjoy more of this wondrous culture—or simply a stroll on a sun-kissed beach and a swim in the turquoise waters. Renowned as the site of the former Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, Rhodes was home to the Knights of St John from the 12th to 16th centuries. Their famous Palace of the Grand Masters is a ‘must-see’, as are many of the inns occupied by the Crusaders and the replica of the old church. For an in-depth look at the city, you can take in the archeological site where the Acropolis of Rhodes and the ancient stadium stand before returning to Splendor.
The luxury of Seven Seas Splendor awaits us, and we shall wine and dine the night away, enjoying her unrivalled amount of space at sea as we sail from Greece to our first port of call in Turkey— sun-blessed Bodrum, a glittering jewel on Turkey’s Aegean coast.
Located in the south-western corner of Anatolia, Bodrum is a coastal town where sleek yachts are anchored in twin bays beneath the walls of a mediaeval Crusaders’ castle. The town owes its fame to Mausolus and his famous ‘Mausoleum’, another of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World which we shall visit on this cruise. Here we may also choose to visit crystal-clear Lake Bafa, once part of the Aegean Sea, in the shadow of the Besparmak Mountains. Watch for pelicans or sea eagles in this bird-lover’s paradise. Appreciate the ruins of ancient Herakleia, including a two-story agora and the Temple of Athena. Enjoy a refreshing swim in pristine Lake Bafa, if you so desire, and relish a lunch of regional specialties at a traditional Turkish restaurant. It is all part of the 45 free shore excursions included in this voyage.
After another wonderful night aboard Splendor we shall arrive at Ephesus, one more highlight of our voyage—and another Wonder of the World. This vibrant classical city has some of the best preserved Greek and Roman ruins in the Mediterranean. The site is a treasure trove of Ancient Roman and Greek history, allowing us to walk through its streets and view its magnificent houses, temples and stadia—and we can survey this UNESCO World Heritage site under the tutelage of an expert archaeologist.
We will view parts of Ephesus that are off-limits to most visitors, with a guided look at some of the most breathtaking ruins. Walk the white marbled pathways, noting grooves made by centuries of chariot wheels. Stand in awe before the great Library of Celsus, and sit for a moment as the past seems to come alive at the Great Amphitheatre, carved from the side of a mountain, where it is believed Saint Paul preached to the Pagans. This is a spectacular port of call and we shall be inspired as we return to Splendor for another relaxing evening before our final destination, Istanbul, where we shall stay overnight, to really absorb this magical city.
Bridging Europe and Asia Minor, this great capital was founded by Constantine the Great. The history dates back 16 centuries to the powerful Byzantine and Ottoman Empires—and you will enjoy extra time in Istanbul to explore the sights in this legendary city. Tour the magnificent courtyards of Topkapi Palace, stroll among the treasures of the Blue Mosque with its unique six minarets, then view Dolmabahce Palace, the one-time residence of the sultans. Or you may cruise along the Bosphorus for a unique perspective of the city’s seaside mansions, mosques and palaces. Take a stroll among the winding byways of the Grand Bazaar and the exotic stalls of the Spice Bazaar.
Istanbul will be a fitting culmination of our spectacular cruise, which finally must end as we disembark for the journey home—or we can extend the pleasures of this amazing trip by staying on in Istanbul for a night or more—creating a truly tailormade finale.
