Manhattan’s midtown has long been labelled the engine-room of New York. After all, this is where the heart of the business district meets Broadway, clearly a marriage made in heaven. In midtown you are never far from an iconic skyscraper such as the Empire State or the Chrysler Building and a great show off Times Square.
When the Royalton Hotel opened in 1988, designed by the legendary Phillipe Starke as New York’s first boutique hotel, it was dubbed ‘the hippest hotel in Manhattan’ and effectively began the boutique movement in the Big Apple. Its larger-than-life lobby forged its reputation as a meeting-place to see and be seen in, arguably beginning the art of lobby socialising, a trend that still exists today, albeit in a more understated way since its multi-million-dollar refit.
The legendary lobby still stands proud but now has more of a members’ club feel about it; the floor-to-ceiling bronze fireplace and hand-upholstered leather walls and dark wood surrounds.
Upstairs, the guestrooms retain Phillipe Starke’s original vision of space and comfort, with built-in banquettes running the length of the room, a working fireplace for that cosy feel, a king bed with crisp 300-thread-count cotton linens, silk curtains and slate and mirrored tiled bathrooms. Perhaps the most indulgent feature of all, however, is the huge 5ft round Roman bath, more than enough to sooth tired bones after a full day in Manhattan.
In keeping with its legendary lobby socialising heritage, The Royalton’s Forty Four restaurant and cocktail bar overseen by renowned Manhattan restaurateur John McDonald offers some entertaining mixes including the signature 44 Palmer, made from Woodford Reserve bourbon, house sweet tea, muddled lemon and Angostura bitters complete with ‘slow melt’ ice chunks.
The Royalton is a piece of Manhattan history which has reinvented itself for today’s 21st century living, and we thoroughly recommend it to our Members.
