Rose Rayhaan by Rotana

Dubai is a fascinating desert oasis, transformed into a city of unfathomable luxury. The most progressive and dynamic of the United Arab Emirates’ seven sheikdoms, this came about through the endeavours of the al-Maktoum family, who settled at the mouth of the Dubai creek in 1833—and whose current ruler, the familiar figure to English racegoers of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, as a boy rode on the sands of Jumeirah and grew up to own not only this great city but many of the world’s great racehorses, creating an equestrian dynasty on the English Turf that will never be forgotten.

In Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed has created an Arabian Hong Kong, part glory-days Hollywood with the design sense of Miami and the flash of Las Vegas, and a business empire to rival any in the world. Dubai as a whole is probably the world’s ultimate playground for tourism and wealth creation. And at its heart is our choice of the Dubai city hotels: the Rose Rayhaan by Rotana.

Occupying the world’s second tallest hotel, the Rose Rayhaan by Rotana is a 72-storey building providing a variety of modern, spacious rooms and suites that feature stunning city views. Regularly hailed as one of the top hotels in Dubai for business travellers, it is also excellent for families and couples seeking a central Sheikh Zayed Road location. It is surrounded by metro stations, restaurants and cafés (the hotel itself is an alcohol-free zone), and the DIFC Business Centre is nearby.

All rooms have spectacular city views (and, unless you are afraid of heights, ask for a room on a high floor, with Burj Khalifa views) are modern, spacious and extremely comfortable. They have heavenly beds, large TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, fast Internet access and kitchenettes with fridge, freezer and microwave, making this a great choice for families. The service is excellent throughout the hotel: not only warm and welcoming, but also knowledgeable.

Everything in Dubai is but a short cab or metro ride from ‘the Rose’. For a taste of real Arabian life all you need do is wander through the labyrinth of souks in the Old Deidra district, perhaps the largest such market in Arabia. The Gold Souk, for instance, must be seen to be believed. Even die-hard non-shoppers should visit as part of their cultural experience. Or take a trip into the desert, to the polo stables, the falconry mews and the racecourse (where the world’s richest race is run)—or try a camel safari. Mountains as well as water surround Dubai, and you will see marvellous sights, from awe-inspiring sand dunes to lush green parks, from dusty villages to luxurious residences and from ancient houses with wind towers to ultra-modern shopping malls.
