Relais Villa Abbondanzi

Relais Villa Abbondanzi

They say Emilia-Romagna is the culinary heart of Italy; after all, Pellegrino Artusi, the grandfather of Italian cuisine, was born here, and who can possibly question the quality of Parma ham or Balsamic, or the delicious Parmigiano-Reggiano? But this treasure-laden region of Italy, fuelled by the mighty River Po, has great Romanesque and Renaissance cities too. Cities such as Bologna, Ravenna, Parma and Modena, not to mention its close neighbour Florence.

With all these mighty cities so close, it is perhaps no surprise that Faenza lives in their shadow, but this small town is the home of the International Museum of Ceramics as a result of its Majolica production, a tin-based pottery from the Renaissance era. The town’s prosperity was signified by the numerous 17th- and 18th-century mansions lining the Via Aemilia, the ancient road to Rome. It is in one of these where you will find Relais Villa Abbondanzi, within a beautifully manicured five-acre private park full of rare trees and wildlife.

The main house and its former farm buildings, dating back to the aristocratic former owners, the Abbondanzi family, have enjoyed their own particular renaissance having been converted into a luxury boutique hotel and restaurant, fitness centre, spa and outdoor swimming pool. Each of the 15 comfortable guestrooms is different, and each incorporate some of the original features of the house, the wooden flooring, the fireplaces and beamed ceilings, and all include fluffy robes and slippers, cable television and free wi fi.

The restaurant and its adjacent gazebo offer plenty of views of the surrounding park whilst you enjoy authentic Romagna regional dishes with fresh fish and seafood in particular, a speciality.

The natural park scenery is a perfect place to find the Cottage and Spa, the hotel’s wellness centre. Invigorate body and soul with a Turkish bath, a Jacuzzi, sauna, emotional shower and water beds.

The Relais Villa Abbondanzi is an ideal base from which to explore the ceramic delights of Faenza and the UNESCO heritage treasures of Ravenna.
