Red Wine Trophy, International Wine Challenge 2019

More than 10,000 wines are entered annually into the International Wine Challenge and this fabulous 2017 red, ‘Papa Figos’ by Casa Ferreirinha, from the Douro Valley has romped home with the 2019 award for the Best Value Champion Red Wine—a stunning achievement. The Club Tasting Panel are pleased to recommend it to Members. This is a stunning red, made from some of the finest vineyards in the region, judged as the best by some of the best palates in the UK wine trade. Casa Ferreirinha is the table wine allied to the famous Ferreira Port house, founded by Bernardo Ferreira in the 18th century. It is best known for making one of Portugal’s most esteemed wines—the rare and iconic Barca Velha. The ‘Papa Figos’ 2017 is a deep ruby colour and has an intense aroma with prominent notes of heather, flowers, fresh red fruit and balsamic hints of resin and cedar. Smooth on the palate, it has polished tannins of great quality, further notes of red fruit and touches of spiciness. The finish is extremely elegant. It is gorgeous on its own, and accompanying many different foods, including game birds (it is delicious with the Club’s smoked partridge). Tinta Roriz 35%, Tinta Barroca 25%, Touriga Franca 25%, Touriga Nacional, 15%. Drinking until 2023.
