The superb 2019 Sautereau Sancerre, one of Decanter’s Top Wines in their 2020 review of Loire Sauvignon Blanc

£197.00

We are delighted to introduce this delicious Sancerre 2019—one of Decanter’s top wines in their 2020 review of Loire Sauvignon, beautifully made by David Sautereau, winemaker behind Berry Bros & Rudd’s own Sancerre. It is excellent, a benchmark example of Sauvignon Blanc in its spiritual home. Already good value at over the £20 mark, as a Club Member you of course enjoy an even better price of £16.42 a bottle delivered.

David Sautereau is the ninth generation making exceptional wine in the village of Crézancy just to the west of Sancerre. The Domaine’s 22 hectares of vineyard are situated mainly in Crézancy, with a tiny proportion located in Bué and the village of Sancerre itself. The range of soils in this area, many of which are predominantly calcerous, allows a good spread of different blending components for the wine, giving more complex and varied flavours.

This the 2019 Sautereau Sancerre is superb, with a pale gold colour and an expressive and elegant nose. Aromas of citrus and gooseberry are complemented by floral and limestone notes which follow through on to the rounded palate. Fresh, delicately fruity, it has fabulous acidity combined with floral, citrus and mirabelle plum notes. Medium-bodied, it has a lovely long, crisp, saline finish.

An aperitif to savour, this wine will go beautifully with fish and shellfish in most preparations—try white fish with a sage and butter sauce or simply grilled prawns—and match with creamy goat’s cheese, on its own, in a salad, or stuffed and cooked in green bell peppers. Michel Roux recommends drinking this with skate-filled ravioli.
