Michelin Star Chablis: Domaine Laroche ‘Saint Martin’ 2018: spectacular award winning wine: ‘the best vintage in 20 years’: a snip at £249 per case of 12 bottles delivered
This award-winning 2018 Chablis Domaine Laroche ‘Saint Martin’ is a Premier Cru in all but name. It epitomises Chablis—and the 2018 was the best Chablis vintage for 20 years. This gorgeous wine is served by Alain Ducasse at his two-Michelin-Star restaurant at The Dorchester at £65 a bottle. For our Members it is just over £20 a bottle including delivery to your door. It is a gorgeous, silky Chablis, which will beautifully enhance all your shellfish and creamy fish and poultry dishes, and be a sensational aperitif to drink alone.
2018 was one of the best vintages for Chablis in the last 20 years. An unusually warm, dry summer encouraged optimal ripeness while warding off diseases, resulting in plentiful yields.
Laroche winemaker Grégory Viennois is a vigneron of flair and precision. He refers to Chardonnay’s ‘two-day window’ of maturity—if they don’t pick the grapes in this time, the precious Chablis aromas might leave the skin of the grapes. Viennois is excited by the remarkable potential of ‘Saint Martin’, its flagship wine, dedicated to Saint Martin, an officer in the Roman army who converted to Christianity. When he died in 397 his relics were kept in Tours, where an abbey was founded and dedicated to him.
The niche where the relics were kept is still exposed, in the remains of a tower, in the middle of ageing wines. The resulting wine is arguably as good as many Left Bank Premiers Crus. ‘Saint Martin’ is a special wine of impeccable quality from very old vines, with the emphasis on purity and minerality. It won the prestigious Silver Medal at the International Wine Challenge (IWC). Judges in the Sommelier Wine Awards 2019 were high in their praise, one noting, ‘Wow! There’s a hint of truffle and blue cheese. Nice minerality and an oily texture, all wrapped around Granny Smith apples with a lemon sherbet and crushed stone finish.’. The Club Tasting Panel were also very impressed—this is a vintage which truly reveals the limestone and singularity of the terroirs of Chablis.
The wine is a brilliant pale yellow, the nose opening on notes of white flowers and fresh apple. Fermentation takes place partially in 30-year-old oak, bringing subtle and complex notes of fresh undergrowth and cedar, minerality on the palate with a long and saline finish. The wine is drinking beautifully now and will continue to do so until 2023—so now is a good time to snap it up, particularly at the Club wholesale price. Enjoy alone as an aperitif or with seafood—it is perfect with a buttery Dover sole, for example, or any seafood with a butter or cream sauce, with scallops, lobster or crab.
