We are delighted to recommend to our Members this Gold Medal winning Sicilian wine from the 2020 Sommelier Wine Awards—Mandrarossa Viognier La Sènie 2019. It is delicious!

Made by one of Italy’s outstanding co-operatives, Cantine Settesoli—who founded Mandrarossa in 1999 after more than 20 years of studying the terroirs—this single variety Viognier 2019 is a star wine. It is from Menfishire, one of the most important wine-producing areas in Sicily, a strip of Sicilian land overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, a wild, pristine territory of rare natural beauty.

The result is a wine with intense, captivating aroma and flavours. An attractive yellow with golden reflections, on the nose it offers ripe fruit notes such as loquat, yellow peach and apricot. On the palate it is full and opulent, with a delicate minerality and notes of almond on the finish. It is applauded by the Sommelier judges, who note: ‘A fabulous nose, literally bursting from the glass, bright and luscious, very drinkable, with an underlying complexity. A wonderful mouthfeel and great finish. Wow!’ Other comments: ‘Chamomile, green tea, peach and white flowers on the nose, and a fresh palate. A fantastic aperitif, it would match with spaghetti with clams too.’

It is a delicious partner for food—hence the sommeliers rate it so highly. Pair with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops, lobster and baked crab, with or without a hint of spice. Sicilians pair with orange, fennel and anchovy salad, stuffed sardines, spaghetti with seafood and fresh goat’s cheese. It works well too with chicken salads, particularly those with apricot, peach or mango, with creamy coronation chicken and dishes with ginger, saffron and coconut, so creamy curries and spicy noodle dishes such as Pad Thai. Try also with roast pork, which matches beautifully, particularly with spice. Or with sweet root vegetables, especially carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes and spiced butternut squash.

This is a delicious wine, which will not disappoint!
