Kevin Judd first helped to make New Zealand’s iconic Cloudy Bay famous with his great winemaking skills. Eventually he decided to start a venture on his own and Greywacke was born. This is his 92-point Sauvignon. Brilliant lime and mineral fresh.
Greywacke was created in 2009 by Judd, chief winemaker at Cloudy Bay from its inception for 25 years, and instrumental in the international recognition which Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc enjoys now. He chose the name ‘Greywacke’ for his own Marlborough Sauvignon—and his reputation continues apace. This is great Sauvignon Blanc.
It is no surprise that Greywacke is so good: Judd left Cloudy Bay to launch Greywacke in his own style—it is beautifully ripe, with rounded fruit, fine balance, great concentration and intensity. It has a softer finish than some NZ Sauvignon Blanc, with no sourness or grassiness. ‘I don’t like aggressive Sauvignon that grabs you by the nose and drags you in,’ Judd says. ‘A bit of greenness is traditional, but I’m definitely leaning towards ripe and fleshy, even tropical-fruit qualities.’
You will love this wine, as do the critics and buyers—each vintage is a sell-out. Delicious on its own, it enhances many foods, its intense flavours enhance everything from smoked salmon and asparagus to grilled trout, halibut and game fish. Excellent with crab and anchovies, even caviar, it is also a fine accompaniment to goat’s cheese and salads. It makes a great choice to serve with canapés and with any summer lunch or dinner. As to price, Greywacke sells for up to £22 a bottle—but our Members pay just £15.75 including UK mainland delivery.
