London Cru Baker St 2019: Benchmark Bacchus with a ‘haunting perfume of elderflower and cricket pitch cuttings’: 93/100 from Decanter: English wine to make the heart sing: case of 12 bottles delivered: sold out
An award of 93/100 points from the connoisseurs at Decanter is a well deserved accolade for this ‘showcase Bacchus’. Hailed by a raft of critics, it is a real delight—an English wine made by London Cru from 100% Bacchus grapes grown in the heart of the English countryside. It’s a wine which makes the heart sing!
Connoisseur Matthew Jukes writes of its ‘haunting perfume of elderflower and cricket pitch cuttings’. Decanter connoisseur Julie Sheppard notes that ‘this elegant, gastronomic wine shows what can be achieved with English Bacchus in the right hands’. This delicious wine has been acclaimed by the critics:
Decanter (93/100 points): ‘Fresh and appealing Sauvignon-like nose, with lime, gooseberry, herbal and grassy notes. Judicious oak use (23% of the wine spends seven months in used premier cru Burgundy barrels) adds a delightful creaminess, well balanced by fresh acidity, plus notes of citrus interwoven with passionfruit, fresh pineapple and subtle elderflower. Ends with a crisp grapefruit bite.’
Matthew Jukes MW, ‘Lively, perky and lifted with a lust for life which so many pretenders to the Bacchus throne fail to engender. Ready to go, it ought to be your go-to apero.’
John Clarke, Independent: ‘A wine that zings.’
Olly Smith, Mail: ‘Exuberant, floral . . liquid splendour.’
John Mobbs, Great British Wine: ‘A super-punchy palate, bursting up front with zesty lime and pink grapefruit energy. I really enjoyed the textural qualities and intensity of this wine which feels perfectly placed as a showcase Bacchus.’
Central London’s first urban winery, London Cru began production in 2013 in a former gin distillery. The Bacchus grapes are grown in two vineyards in West Sussex, hand-picked, transported to the London winery within hours, gently pressed, then aged partially in old oak barrels from Chavy-Chouet in Meursault, which helped to delicately develop the wine during ageing.
Drink now and over the next two to three years. Enjoy alone and with fresh seafood and oysters.
