Gold Medal, Concours Général Agricole de Paris 2020

91/100 points Decanter

Rosé from the Bandol region of Provence usually commands a handsome premium—and the vines of Domaine Maubernard are on one of the most sought after terroirs in Bandol, marching with those of the famous Château Pibarnon and even sharing an oenologist.

The result is a Gold Medal-winning 2020 vintage rosé, very drinkable, vibrant and refreshing, dry, crisp and subtle. It offers lovely spice, citrus and red berry fruit balanced by excellent acidity and freshness.

Today the seafaring founder Captain Fabre’s great-grandson Michel Vidal is in charge of the Maubernard estate. Most vines are planted in a steep, south-facing amphitheatre in stony soils infused with limestone (giving freshness) and magnesium (for power). Predominantly Mourvèdre with a splash of Grenache and Cinsault, the high clay content retains what little water the heavens send, so the long ripening season for Mourvèdre takes place in perfect conditions. They receive roughly 3,000 hours of sunshine above the coastal fog, perfect for this late-ripener. The wine is aged for a minimum of 18 months in large oak barrels, called foudre.

This wine is a sommelier’s delight—delicious paired with grilled fish including salmon, with spicy foods, light pasta dishes, salads and green vegetables, soft blue cheese and more. It is also delicious served alone as an apéritif.
