Best In Show, Platinum Medal, 97/100 Decanter World Wine Awards 2019
91/100 Wine Spectator
Standing out among the top wines in the world at the influential Decanter World Wine Awards, ‘Coto de Imaz’ Gran Reserva 2012 took the supreme title, Best in Show, from 16,500 wines competing in this year’s event. It swept the board, awarded a Platinum Medal and 97/100 points as well as Best in Show. It is the only Rioja ever to achieve this. The wine, as you might expect, is sensational.
Mature and elegant, its rich aromatic complexity is initially subtle, revealing itself more and more as the wine breathes. Toasted oak nuances and coconut give way to notes of leather and damp earth from bottle ageing. On the palate, silky, rounded tannins accompany fresh red berries, dried raisins and spicy notes. This is a complex wine with exceptional concentration and a long finish. Decanter World Wine Awards judges acclaimed it as, ‘Rioja of innate drama. Look out for dark, urgent fruits, sweetened and back-lit by cunningly angled oak, with intense, deep, fresh and searching flavours.’ Wine Spectator: ‘This polished red is focused and harmonious. Black cherry, tea, licorice, dried orange and spice notes mingle over firm, well-integrated tannins, while orange peel acidity keeps this lively. Expressive, in the traditional style. Drink now through 2024.’
James Suckling: ‘Lots of vanilla, chocolate-coated blackberries, cedar, tobacco and glazed dark cherries. Medium to full body, succulent tannins, fruit-driven finish.’ It’s superb with roast lamb, game and red meat. Tempranillo 90%, Graciano 10%. Alc 13.5% vol.
