Château Léoville-Poyferré is one of the most impressive and exciting properties in the Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Julien, an icon of balance and tradition—and we are delighted to have this, the impressive 2015 Pavillon, the second wine, in the Club Cellar. The Bordeaux fine wine connoisseurs are applauding it for its elegance and class, and at the Club price for a wine which is from an excellent vintage, is drinking beautifully now yet will age wonderfully well until 2035, it’s a great wine which no fine wine lover should miss—particularly at the Club price saving £100 per case of six.

Up with the best of the St-Juliens, Léoville-Poyferré marches with Pichon Baron and Léoville Las Cases. It has a history dating back to the early 17th century and is famous for the elegance of its wines. The vineyards benefit from a terroir renowned for its gravel soils of the Garonne, which guarantees ideal conditions for growing grapes.

Léoville Poyferré has been owned by the Cuvelier family (who also own Château Le Crock) since 1921. In the last 20 years, Didier Cuvelier, with the assistance of the famous winemaker Michel Rolland since 1995, has regained Léoville-Poyferré’s place as one of St-Julien’s finest estates.

The second wine of the estate, Pavillon is produced from youngervines than the grand vin while benefitting from the same care, both in the vineyard and in the cellars. The blend includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. The result is an accessible, fruity and easy-drinking wine, which is aged in third-passage barrels for nine months. Enjoy it in anticipation of the finesse, elegance and balance of the Grand Vin.

On the nose, the wine reveals elegance and fragrance, with aromas of blackcurrant and blackberry. On the palate, there is a concentration and intensity of fruit, accompanied by a pleasant freshness. Black cherry and currant fruits are on show here, with a silky-smooth texture and hints of vanilla, oak, cedar, liquorice and tobacco. The wine has great structure and balance, with fleshy and velvety tannins. It goes very well with red meat, lamb and duck dishes. It is a delicious wine which can be drunk now or cellared until 2035.

Notes James Suckling (scoring 93/100), ‘Generous ripe fruit yet with the cool elegance and slightly austere finish of St.-Julien. Considerable intensity without any sense of heaviness make this an impressive example of modern winemaking.’

Notes Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com, ‘A lovely second wine. Delicate, fragrant and expressive, with pretty red/purplish berry fruit, spice and rose petal nuances, the Pavillon is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years. This is a decidedly laid-back style.’

From VertdeVin, ‘Notes of blackberry, ripe wild berries and hints of ripe fresh strawberries combined with a discreet note of violet and hints of chocolate, caramelised oak and a subtle Sichuan pepper. The palate is fruity, well-balanced with a slight freshness, a slight fat, a good structure. On the palate, notes of blackberry, raspberry and juicy strawberry associated with touches of small berries, chocolate, toasted oak, caramelised oak and a discreet hint of flowers, vanilla and cocoa on the finish. Tannins are fine and well-built. Good persistence.’

Notes Vinous Media, ‘The 2015 Pavillon de Poyferré is a lovely wine. Delicate, fragrant and expressive, with pretty red/purplish berry fruit, spice and rose petal nuances, the Pavillon is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next few years.’
