Writes Simon Rudd MW, of Berry Brothers & Rudd, ‘This delicious wine merits all the traditional Crozes descriptors, namely tapenade, bacon rind and crushed blackberry. With aromas of violet and hints of graphite and smoke on the palate, the wine does not want for complexity too … what more could one wish for?’
Made with 100% Syrah grapes from 30-year-old vines, the critics noted: ‘Spice, balance, silky tannins—this Crozes-Hermitage has it all.’
Maison Les Alexandrins brings together the scions of two great families of the Rhône, Nicolas Jaboulet, formerly of the eponymous winery in Tain, and the Perrin family of Château de Beaucastel, and viticulturalist Alexandre Caso.
This wine is bright ruby red in colour, with purple hues. Aromas of ripe black cherry and blackberries combine with a hint of smokiness. The intensity of flavour and well-integrated tannins provide concentration, yet smoothness on the palate. Match with game, terrines, ham, lamb shoulder, red meats and generally big flavours with herbs such as rosemary and bay, even casseroles—we think this wine is a great food pairing now and it will improve further. Drink a few bottles, then cellar the rest for up to eight years for a delightful surprise: this wine has the potential to become outstanding, and the current Club price is a steal.
