Château de Santenay ‘Les Puillets’ 2016 is a fabulous, multiple award-winning Premier Cru Burgundy at a sensible price through the Club Wine Cellar. This historic estate, which dates back to the 7th century, has won a fistful of major trophies, including ‘Mercurey Trophy’, ‘Red Burgundy Trophy’, ‘French Red Trophy’ and ‘International Pinot Noir Trophy’, Decanter Trophy for ‘Best Red Mâconnais & Chalonnais’ and Decanter Platinum Award and only recently added the Silver Medal at the prestigious International Wine Channel. It’s this quality that makes Château de Santenay such a huge favourite with Club Members—it’s tremendous value for a Premier Cru Burgundy, and our Members save some £100 per case.

Château de Santenay wines are known for their rich palette, thanks to the beautiful split of their vineyards between Cote d’Or and Cote Chalonnaise. The diverse climates and soil quality of these places lend a distinct character to the wines created here on this magnificent property, which dates back to the 9th century. Also known as Château Philippe le Hardi, it was once owned by the first Duc of Burgundy, Philippe le Hardi. He famously banned the cultivation of Gamay in the Côte d’Or, saying in his edict of 1395 that only Pinot Noir could be used in the production of red wines from the already fabled slopes.

This southeast-facing vineyard produces a warm style of wine, and this, the 2016, is rich with blackberry and red-cherry flavours. Dark ruby in colour, this wine is bright and lifted with excellent concentration. the nose is elegant with aromas of ripe red fruit including cherries and a touch of oak. The palate is full, with great structure and an attractive chewy and grainy character. The finish is long and fresh. Lined with acidity, the wine is still firm, and although young it is drinking well now and it will improve for a decade or longer.

This pure Pinot Noir is produced from hand-harvested domaine-grown grapes from the eight hectare 1er Cru ‘Les Puillets’ vineyard. The wine spent 13 months maturing in French oak barrels (20% new) before being bottled. Drinking beautifully now, it is a great match for grouse, pheasant, venison, goose, duck and more, and it will cellar well for several years.

As a Premier Cru Burgundy it will make an excellent gift for your discerning, wine-loving friends and clients. 100% Pinot Noir. High Environmental Value estate.
