Gold standard Chianti: Selvapiana Chianti Rufina 2017 from the hills above Florence: a snip at £159 per case of 12 bottles delivered: vintage sold out
We apologise, but this vintage is now sold out.
This is gold standard Chianti, a classic, perfumed and elegant red from Selvapiana, one of the top estates in the region, as refined and pure as it gets. Write the critics at Wine Spectator: ‘Selvapiana would give stiff competition to first-class red wines from just about anywhere in the world.’ And for our Members it’s a snip at only £13.25 per bottle delivered.
The Rufina zone is the smallest of all in Chianti (about 1,000 hectares of vineyard) and also one of the most special. It is much higher in elevation, located in the hills east of Florence, with tree-lined slopes dotted with picturesque vineyards. Maritime breezes brought in by passes cut into the Apennines gradually cool the vineyards here, producing wines with incredible finesse. We should be there now—but at least with this excellent Chianti we can enjoy the fruits of Tuscany and raise a toast to future trips!
And there is no better producer in Rufina than Selvapiana, which has been in the Francesco Giuntini family since 1827. Originally constructed as a watchtower to safeguard the city of Florence, the historic Selvapiana estate has been producing some of the best wines in the region for centuries. Organic farming was and is the norm here. These days the property is run by Federico Masseti, whose passion for this beautiful estate in the foothills of the Apennines is evident in the consistent quality of the wines.
This 2017 is glorious, a blend of 95% Sangiovese, with Canaiolo Colorino and Malvasia Nera, from vines of 15-40+ years in age. With soaring aromatics of wild cherries, strawberries and plenty of candied citrus fruit, this is a wonderfully elegant, charming Chianti. Silky and seamless on the palate, its delicate red berried fruit flavours seem to dance across the tongue. There’s just the right amount of tannin here, with plenty of mineral tang on the finish. Pairings? The Italian classics, pasta al pomodoro and margherita pizza, but also fresh salmon and tuna. Stunning now, you can expect to cellar for another 10 years. Stock up on this!
