Gold Medal, Sommelier Wine Awards 2020

As soon as we told our Members about this Gold Medal winning wine from Australia’s McLaren Vale they snapped it up—so here it is again in our ‘favourites list’, the 2018 vintage, a superb wine applauded by the afficionados from Steven Spurrier (leading Master of Wine for Decanter) to the international sommeliers—and again a Gold Medal winner, this time from the Sommelier Wine Awards 2020.

It really is delicious. As Matthew Jukes writes, ‘If only life were as joyous as Willunga.’ If you have not yet tried it, now is definitely the time!

The wine has exceptional depth and richness, a velvety tannin structure, lingering finish and a palate of plums, dark chocolate, blackcurrants and blackberries … Awarding their Gold Medal the Sommelier judges note, ‘A fresh fruit-basket character accompanied by some sweet spices—refreshing, intense and well-balanced’, adding ‘A very rich wine with some creamy forest fruit and lots of oak, all leading to a savoury finish.’

It goes beautifully with lamb, and  other red meats and cheeses, making it a versatile red to have in your cellar. Our Club Tasting Panel are firm devotees of this wine, and judging by the response so far our Members agree.
