Excellent Côtes du Rhône: Domaine de Pierredon Les Vignerons D’Estezargues 2018: Delicious wine, a great deal at only £119 per case of 12 bottles delivered
Here is a hidden gem of a wine: Domaine de Pierredon Côtes du Rhône 2016, Les Vignerons D’Estezargues is rich, smooth and complex, with a spicy, peppery nose and aromas and flavours of dark fruits.
This wine offers much more than an average Côtes-du-Rhône—it’s wonderful drink from a co-operative famed for artisan wine-making.
It comes from a tiny co-operative in a small village in the Gard—a real hidden gem—and our Club Tasting Panel found the quality, elegance and complexity to be what one expects from wines at twice this price.
Estezargues has been a shining example of a great co-op for many years now, with an artisanal approach to winemaking, making some of the best value wines in the Rhône Valley. The change began in 1989 when Jean-Francois Nicq took over as winemaker. Rather than blend everything together, J-F decided to bottle the members’ production separately, highlighting the individual terroir of the 10 member estates. By the end of the 1990s everything was being made in a hands-off, natural way—conscientious farming, no yeasts, no enzymes, no new oak and no SO2 before bottling. The results were, and are, fantastic.
RRP £220. CCUK £119 with free mainland UK delivery.
Decanter’s experts praised the wine as: ‘One of the best reds in the “natural wine” showcase at the tasting, a well-crafted aromatic and bright, lively cherry fruity blend of Syrah and Grenache in equal proportions with typical spice adding flavour from the terroir character of Denis Deschamps’ galet-strewn clay soils.‘
This deep ruby-coloured Rhône has nice concentration, leading to a lovely finish. It is delicious paired with game and lamb. For quality, value for money, and easy drinking, it takes some beating.
Syrah 60%. Grenache 40%.
