Elegant, excellent 2017 Pinot Noir from Montes Zapallar Vineyard, Outer Limits, Chile: Case of 12 bottles delivered, £197
We all know why £5 bottles of Chilean red have long been popular. They are fruity, spicy and full-bodied. But if we spend a little more what can we get? The answer is: wines that are stupendous, at half the price we would pay if they were French. One Chilean producer who stands out in the top league is Aurelia Montes, a now legendary winemaker who founded Montes in 1988 with the aim of producing the best wines in Chile. He succeeded, and our Tasting Panel has selected a trio of his excellent wines for the Club Cellar, two from a ground-breaking Montes estate—the Zapallar Vineyard, known as ‘Outer Limits’ because it was born from Aurelia Montes’ desire to push winemaking beyond the usual Chilean frontiers.
Tim Atkin MW awarded the Montes Pinot Noir 2017 from Zapallar a whopping 91/100 points. Medium bodied, bright ruby red in colour, the 100% Pinot Noir wine is elegant and complex, with aromas of violets, ripe cherries, raspberries, pepper and herbs. On the palate it is exuberant, with bright fruit, silky tannins and a lingering cherry finish.
It is delicious—the perfect match for roast duck (superb with duck and orange sauce for example), for wild boar, Camembert cheese, mushroom risotto and more.
