Delightful Sicilian summer red, Donnafugata Sherazade Nero d’Avola, 2017: Case of 12 bottles delivered: Vintage sold out

£149.00

This fresh and fruity Sicilian red is a delicious summer aperitif and extremely food-friendly and versatile wine. It is made by the famous Rallo family, whose wine-making pedigree goes back to 1851 in Marsala, and who were recently featured in Decanter, lauded for producing wines with ‘a kaleidoscope of aromas, textures and flavours that testify to the richness of Sicily.’

The Donnafugata Sherazade Nero d’Avola 2017 is named for the Arabian Nights—hence that stunning label—and is highly rated by the critics. Awarding 90 points, the influential connoisseur James Suckling in ‘Wine Spectator’ notes ‘elderberry pie, cranberry sauce and raspberry cheesecake. Light to medium body.’

Sherazade is made solely from the excellent Sicilian Nero d’Avola grapes, producing a soft and enveloping wine with smooth tannins and plenty of finesse. The Club Tasting Panel loved it, noting ‘spicy black cherry’ and ‘an edge of sweetness, spice and herbs, basil and mint, which make it a great match for a creamy summer dish such as fresh tuna, anchovies and capers with pasta’. It also goes beautifully with fish soup, classic tomato pasta, creamy white fish, the classic Italian cold poached veal in tuna and anchovy mayonnaise, with char-grilled pork and Mediterranean roast vegetables with herbs, turkey and chicken escalopes, and mushroom dishes.
