Delicious 2016 claret: Château des Antonins 2016, Bordeaux Superieur: a snip at £10.58 a bottle delivered

The 2016 vintage of Bordeaux is widely considered to be excellent, even legendary. Almost perfect conditions in Bordeaux, with hot summer days and cool nights, allowed the fruit to ripen evenly while maintaining acidity—and here we are delighted to have for our Members a delicious 2016 from an historic estate, and a real steal at just £10.58 a bottle delivered. It is from Château des Antonins, on the left bank of the Garonne, south of Graves.

Located south-east of Bordeaux, Château des Antonins is a family-run estate built in the 13th century, named for the ‘Antonins’ monks who lived there for 500 years. A large part still survives today, including a toll bridge, chapel, monastery and various windmills. It is now owned by Geoffroy and Martine de Roquefeuil, who have moved to sustainable farming, their son Antoine becoming head winemaker in 2016.

This 2016 is an attractive deep ruby-red colour with an inviting bouquet of red plum, black cherry and blackcurrant, with hints of cedar and spice. The palate is concentrated and supple, with smooth tannins and layers of bright red fruit, beautiful roundness, fine structure and great aromatic length.

The Club Tasting Panel found this to be textbook claret—amazingly good value, particularly at the Club price. It is drinking beautifully now and may easily become your own house claret!
