Here is a Saint-George-Saint-Émilion wine of a concentration and complexity more often associated with the Grand Crus of Saint-Émilion—and we are delighted to commend to Members the standout vintage 2016 at a superb Members-only price.

It is from the highly regarded Château Macquin in Saint-George-Saint-Emilion, a family owned estate which enjoys one of the best elevations on the right bank, its south-facing vines up to 60 years old. The connoisseurs are raving about this superb wine, among them:

Wine Enthusiast (92/100 points): ‘Richly dense wine that still keeps a sense of elegant proportion. Spice, blackcurrant and acidity all give their characters to this wine.’

James Suckling MW (90/100 points: ‘Attractive and ripe mulberries and riberries, as well as raspberries, leading to a mid-weight palate that has attractive, approachable charm. Drink or hold.’

The Club Tasting Panel are delighted by this wine, noting the ‘deep garnet red colour’. . . ‘alluring nose of spice and notes of ripe dark berry fruits’ . . . the flavours ‘black cherry and raspberry, fine spice, cinnamon, pepper, truffle, leather’. . . ‘a beautiful supple and dense wine, full-bodied, ample, soft, elegant, fine and fresh’, the tannins ‘silky, good intensity’ . . . ‘soft and creamy finish, good length.’

Château Macquin has been in the Macquin family since 1885 and grandson Denis Corre-Macquin is now the skilled, hands-on winemaker. His grandfather was the first to re-plant vines in the St-Émilion region after the phylloxera outbreak of the late 19th century. Today the vines are on average 40 years old, and the vineyards are organically managed.

Denis says of his 2016 wintage, ‘This wine has scents of very ripe black fruits with mocha and roasted notes. In the mouth. It is an ample and powerful wine, with nice fruit-forward flavour and a pleasant tannic structure.

‘I enjoy it alongside many foods including a tasting-board of terrines, cooked meats and cheeses; capon cooked with figs and morels; ribs of veal and boletus mushrooms; or with Wellington style fillet of beef.’

Drinking beautifully now, it will age for up to seven years. Grapes: 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Alcohol level 14%.
