Château Léoville Poyferré is one of the most impressive and exciting properties in the Bordeaux appellation of Saint-Julien, an icon of balance and tradition in the Médoc—and we are delighted to welcome this, the seriously impressive Grand Cru 2017 vintage into the Club Cellar. The Bordeaux fine wine connoisseurs are raving about this wine, and at the Club price for a wine which is drinking beautifully now yet will age wonderfully well until the 2040s, it’s a great claret which no fine wine lover should miss!

Now up with the best of the St-Juliens but still selling at sensible prices, Léoville Poyferré is classified as a 2ème Cru Classé—and through the Club the price is even more attractive. Read on for just some of the accolades bestowed on this 2017 vintage by the Masters of Wine:

Neal Martin:
‘The 2017 Léoville Poyferré has a beautifully defined bouquet with mineral-rich red fruit that is utterly refined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. This is silky smooth in texture with plush black and blue fruit, pinned together by a killer line of acidity and impressive tension on the finish. Not a vintage to be ignored from this estate.’

Decanter:
‘Succulent damson and cappuccino expression through the finish, along with tautly constructed, bouncy tannins that are both expressive and powerful. It’s one of the more rich and round wines in St-Juliens, as fits the house style. Extremely accomplished, it’s powerful and will clearly age well. A success in the vintage, underlining again that St-Julien has had an extremely lucky 2017.’

James Suckling:
‘A red with currant and blueberry aromas and flavours and some citrus and vanilla. Medium body and creamy, integrated tannins. Shows finesse and depth for the vintage. One of the best from the appellation.’

Matthew Jukes:
‘This is a superb wine with flair and control in equal measure. Very attractive on the nose and palate, this is an indulgent wine with depth and succulence. The oak is fairly dominant and there is some dark extraction here, but there is no astringency. Fondant fruit and chocolate tones make this seem very forward but this is not the case because the tannins are powdery and persistent and they roll on for minutes.’

Le Guide Hachette:
‘The 2017 Léoville Poyferré marks a trilogy of remarkable vintages. A new favourite for the vintage, the wine that i opens up with aeration to elegant aromas of black fruits and toasted wood. It is really in the mouth that it asserts itself: lots of flesh, fat, impressive power and density, and above-average length. Definitely a great wine.’

Saint-Julien is a small but important appellation of the Haut-Medoc district of Bordeaux in south-western France. Its reputation is based on its status as a reliable source of consistently elegant, age-worthy wines.
