Champagne connoisseurs are celebrating the extraordinary Dom Pérignon vintage 2010. This is a vintage literally ‘saved from the waters’, and it has already been acclaimed by critics, achieving 98/100 points from James Suckling MW of Wine Spectator and an almost unheard of 18.5/20  from Jancis Robinson MW. We are delighted that Dom Pérignon have included CountryClubuk in their allocations, to make sure our Members do not miss out on what will be a rarity, one of the very few 2010 vintages to be made in Champagne.

The reason is down to the weather, and the reactions of Dom Pérignon Winemaker Vincent Chaperon to it. As other growers looked on in horror at a freezing winter, dry spring, deluges in August and the threat of botrytis in the grapes, Dom Pérignon acted. They used their considerable resources to micro-analyse every vine, and worked accordingly, painstakingly rescuing, selecting and harvesting the grapes at the precise level of ripeness. It was a feat of skill and endurance. The outcome is that the grapes achieved the third-highest concentration of sugar levels after 2002 and 2003 and both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay came in with the second-highest level of acidity after the 2008 vintage. The results are unexpectedly superb.

Notes James Suckling: ‘A firm and vivid Champagne with a precise, focused palate. Full-bodied and dry. It’s very layered and bright with light pineapple, peach, praline, cooked-apple and stone aromas and flavors. It’s very subtle and focused at the end. Integrated with richness and high acidity. Good depth. Reminds me of the 1995. Very clean. Solid. Lovely to drink already, but will age nicely.’
Jancis Robinson writes, ‘A vintage Vincent Chaperon is convinced has been misguidedly overlooked. 54% Chardonnay, 46% Pinot Noir … Amazingly, obviously, Dom P on the nose –the powerful lemon-mousse nose came soaring out of the glass long before my nose got anywhere near it. Massive intensity of complex aroma hints that this might be a little blowsy on the palate but not a bit of it. It’s really tense and tight on the palate and has a certain fumey smokiness to the very concentrated palate. But its most marked feature is the persistence of the finish . . . Definitely not a weak vintage of Dom P. Drink 2020-2030.’
Writes Adrian Brice of BBR, ‘Generous and expressive on the nose with initial classic Dom Pérignon notes of lifted citrus fruit and precise flinty minerality broadening to a creamy textured richness … with brioche, ripe stone and exotic fruit and heady  hints of white flowers … Chardonnay seems to be to the fore at this stage with Winemaker Vincent Chaperon describing Chardonnay in 2010 as their ‘best ever’. Suave, supple and glossy on the palate with a flamboyant fluid mid-palate nicely balanced by freshness and a fine polished finish. Hard not to enjoy now … and perhaps the perfect foil to 2008, which will need some time to show its full potential.’
