We all know why £5 bottles of Chilean wine have long been popular. But if we spend a little more what can we get? The answer is: wines that are stupendous, at half the price we would pay if they were French—or in the case of Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand.
One Chilean producer who stands out in the top league is Aurelia Montes, a now legendary winemaker who founded Montes in 1988 with the aim of producing the best wines in Chile. He succeeded, and our Tasting Panel has selected a trio of his excellent wines for the Club Cellar, including this Saucignon Blanc from a ground-breaking Montes estate—the Zapallar Vineyard, known as ‘Outer Limits’ because it was born from Aurelia Montes’ desire to push winemaking beyond the usual Chilean frontiers.
Zapallar Vineyard is just 7km from the coast, and the Sauvignon Blanc which it produces rivals the top New Zealands. It has earned accolades over the years from leading wine connoisseurs including Jancis Robinson MW—and this vintage has taken top marks of 18/20 and, from Patricio Tapia of Descorchados, 93/100 and from Tim Atkin MW, 90/100. It is truly excellent!
Writes Jancis Robinson: ‘How much pleasure! A wine with a lot of aroma, with endless layers of aromatic complexity. It has a great mouth-coating texture triggering a herbal memory. The palate is full, rich, pleasant, although with sharp acidity above the rich texture. It is very well delineated, fresh, rich, deep and concentrated. A complete Sauvignon Blanc that will make you salivate. Delicious!’ Drinking Window: 2020-2030.
A delicious Sauvignon Blanc, In addition to its typical notes of passion fruit, it offers aromas of lime and grapefruit with a touch of asparagus in the background. It is fresh, crisp and dry on the palate, with very well-achieved acidity. The body is light, but lingers long, highlighting its cold-climate character. A subtle saline touch on the finish hints at the coastal origin and it is perfect with oysters, sea urchins, scallops and shellfish in general, salmon, ceviche, carpaccio and goat’s cheese.
