£1,687.00

Collectors of limited editions will be intrigued by this one, launched at Claridge’s last week—an enormous 400-page David Bailey SUMO Collector’s Edition featuring more than 300 of the greatest portraits of our time, printed big and bold.
The David Bailey SUMO is one of Taschen’s rare super-size publications, a titanic book in every respect. So enormous—a spread is 1 metre wide—the photographs so exceptional, the production so masterly, it is like having your own personal David Bailey exhibition. Own this, and you own a piece of art history. BBC Radio 4’s Front Row called it ‘a monumental book’, while the Guardian’s Zoe Williams says ‘…it feels as if I’m holding Britain’s collective memory in my hands’.
Titled ‘David Bailey’, it is a Who’s Who over six decades. Bailey (born in 1938) is acknowledged as one of the founding fathers of contemporary photography, having shot some of the most iconic portraits of the last 60 years. Bailey’s early work helped both define and capture the Swinging Sixties.
With his stripped-down, direct style, he reveals the beauty and heart of his subjects—HM The Queen on her 88th birthday, smiling, John Lennon and Paul McCartney, linked but already distant, Nelson Mandela, Francis Bacon, Margaret Thatcher, Jack Nicholson, Salvador Dali, Brigitte Bardot, Man Ray, Marianne Faithful, and of course the Rolling Stones.
The paper is thick, art quality, the printing is superb. Each of the 2,700 limited edition books is numbered and signed by David Bailey, and arrives with a set of four interchangeable book jackets featuring Lennon and McCartney, Jean Shrimpton, Mick Jagger, and Andy Warhol. It weighs 30kg, measures 50cm by 70cm and comes with a purpose-designed bookstand by Marc Newson.
As a line to the form, the Taschen SUMO edition of photographer Helmut Newton sold out soon after publication and quickly multiplied in value. The David Bailey SUMO carries a price tag of £2,250, and is expected to sell out in similar fashion. As a CountryClubuk Member you have the advantageous bookseller’s trade price of £1,687.
