Aquamarine gemstones, some facts:
Aquamarine is the green-blue to blue variety of the mineral beryl. Emerald is the green to bluish green variety of the same mineral. Its colour is usually a light pastel greenish blue. The best aquamarine gems combine high clarity with limpid transparency and blue to slightly greenish blue hues. Like many beryls, aquamarine forms large crystals suitable for sizeable jewellery and carvings.
Named after seawater, aquamarine’s fresh, watery hue is a cool plunge into a lagoon. The name derives from two Latin words: aqua, meaning ‘water’, and marina, meaning ‘of the sea’. Colour is a vital factor in aquamarines. Aquamarine colour is typically light blue with a greenish or turquoise hue.
Gem experts prefer aquamarines with ‘even’ colour—you should not see lighter or darker colour patches within the gem. Look also for a clear, translucent gem.
In folklore, it has been said that the mineral beryl gives the wearer protection against foes in battle or litigation. It makes the wearer unconquerable and amiable, and also quickens the intellect.
Aquamarine is the birthstone for March, the star sign of Pisces, and the gem of the 19th wedding anniversary.
