The Beaumont London: best rates at this award-winning five-star Mayfair hotel with Art Deco style combined with a London club atmosphere which adds up to being one of the world’s leading hotels

Walking into The Beaumont Hotel in Mayfair is rather like walking into a wood-panelled London members’ club: five-star luxury with that exclusive club atmosphere which is so civilised and welcoming. Old school in the things that should be old school—service, style, comfort, personal welcome—and modern in the way you need it to be—smart technology behind a smooth delivery of all that is required of a five-star hotel and more, including a chauffeur-driven Daimler. This is classic style and personal service in a grand tradition.

Despite occupying an Art Deco Grade II listed building constructed in 1926, The Beaumont actually opened only eight years ago, and as such it is very much the new kid on the block—but it feels as if it has been here since the Twenties. It is privately owned and run, the first hotel opened by Jeremy King and Chris Corbin, powerhouses behind the superbly successful The Ivy, Le Caprice, The Delaunay and The Wolseley—which gives an idea of the high-class nature of The Beaumont, its Le Magritte Bar, Gatsby’s Room, and The Colony Grill, which has a reputation for serving the best steak in London.

The Beaumont overlooks Brown Hart Gardens, a peaceful garden square which runs into North Audley Street on one side and Selfridge’s on the other, a select Mayfair neighbourhood close to the shops, galleries, salerooms and museums of Mayfair, St James’s and the West End. The opportunity for a gentle refurbishment during the pandemic has redefined the Beaumont’s sleek, spotless interior: comfortable sitting areas lined in polished walnut with distinctive black-and-white marble floors, bookcases and bucket chairs, a grand piano, bronze statuettes and an impressive, well-chosen art collection.

Traditionally styled, almost masculine bedrooms come with all mod cons. There are 50 rooms and 22 suites and studios, all meticulously designed and appointed, decorated in wood and leather, silks and fine linens, with well considered lighting, original paintings and photographs, good books, notepaper and desks adding individual character to each room, the style of which was created with an Anglo-American eye to the best of British elegance, authenticity and individuality with an unmistakable line in superlative American service.

To make sure this Anglo-American style permeates the entire hotel and all who work within it, King imagined The Beaumont as the hotel of a fictional American hotelier, one James Beaumont, who, King decided, had escaped prohibition Manhattan to set up an establishment in pre-war Mayfair. The idea of the ‘James Beaumont style’, known to every member of The Beaumont team as well as its designers, is at the heart of what makes The Beaumont tick—and it works. In its short life The Beaumont has won a string of top international awards, including The Gallivanter’s Guide’s Best Independent Hotel in the World and Best General Manager Worldwide for two years running. The Colony Grill alone is already a Mayfair institution and receives constant accolades.

It was said by the doyen of restaurant critics A A Gill to have the best cuisine-appropriate interiors in London, and that is still the case. A relaxed, sophisticated, New York-style grill room, it has a timeless menu of transatlantic favourites, steaks, seafood and salads, with, as they say, ‘a big helping of old-world glamour’. The style is created with an eye to Nathaniel Newnham-Davies’ 1914 ‘Gourmet Guide to London’: ‘The modern Grill Room we owe, I think, to the Americans for the travelling American . . . has his own very sensible ideas as to what comfort is. The grill-room gives him an excellent dinner, just as long or short as he likes, served quickly, in luxurious surroundings, and he can dress as he likes, to eat it.’ That sums it all up. Tatler names it, ‘London’s best steak restaurant . . . there’s really no place better to get your carnivorous fix than The Colony Grill.’ Guide Michelin calls it, ‘Defiantly old fashioned… effortlessly chic.’ And Tom Parker-Bowles adds, ‘It serves food you want to eat, in a room in which you want to linger… A gleaming gem.’

The menu is both comforting and strikingly mouthwatering: steaks include Dry Aged Rib Eye and Fillet, Wagyu Strip, Hereford Hanger and Hereford Tartar, plus a whopping Tomahawk for two. All are served with your choice of sauces, from red wine bordelaise to green peppercorn, whipped béarnaise, horseradish, café de paris snails and blue cheese with sides of triple-cooked chips, buttermilk mash, broccoli black garlic, creamed spinach nutmeg and Charlotte potatoes wakame butter. Seafood includes caviar and oysters, Dover sole, Arctic char and Monkfish Wellington. There’s that London club delight, calves liver with caramelised onions and cured bacon, and, for a snack, whipped smoked cod’s roe or truffled toast. The wine list is excellent.

And for in-house guests, normal service at The Beaumont also includes the oft-excluded: you can go the whole hog and order a full breakfast in the Colony Grill (complimentary for our Members from Friday to Sunday), but you can also enjoy the daily ‘Beaumont Baker’s Basket’ of home-made viennoiseries, seasonal preserves, coffee or tea and juices served in Le Magritte Bar, or fresh organic coffee, teas, soft drinks, still and sparkling water, and snacks in the in-room bar, free of charge. There’s high speed wi-fi, local and national landline calls, interactive film and music on demand, access to the in-house digital media platform for a huge selection of international newspapers and magazines, 24 hour gymnasium, and use of the spa’s facilities, including steam room and sauna. Not forgetting The Beaumont’s chauffeur-driven courtesy limousine for emissions-free local trips (subject of course to availability).

The Beaumont is perfect for a stylish stay in a peaceful enclave in the very heart of Mayfair, and for sauntering in to enjoy a quiet coffee with friends or business associates, or afternoon tea in Gatsby’s Room, a drink in The Beaumont’s American bar Le Magritte, or dining in The Colony Grill—and sampling the best steak in London! Private dining and business meetings are also available for any number up to 60 guests.
