It will be a superb chance to see this acclaimed new production, which is winning such accolades—and to see some of theatre’s brightest stars, Charlie Stemp as Burt and Zizi Strallen as Mary Poppins, with Petula Clark, who will be returning to the stage for the first time in 20 years to play the Bird Woman in the show, and sing that iconic song ‘Feed the Birds’. Altogether this production is a ‘life-enhancing, gloriously creative example of what musical theatre in the 21st-century West End can be’
It will be a sell-out show—so we are delighted to have secured seats in the Dress Circle for both the matinee and the evening performances to make sure our Members and their families do not miss this glorious pre-Christmas show—having first enjoyed a delicious Champagne Three-Course Lunch or Dinner at the glittering Savoy Hotel, only minutes from the theatre. We have chosen the Dress Circle because this will be the best position in which to see the full-on production—and this is where Mary Poppins flies during the show—it puts our Members at the very heart of the performance!
The magical story of the world’s favourite Nanny is triumphantly and spectacularly brought to the stage with dazzling choreography, incredible effects and unforgettable songs. Zizi Strallen is returning to play the title role following great acclaim on the recent sell-out international tour, and Charlie Stemp is beloved Bert: he recently gave an award-winning performance as Arthur Kipps in Cameron Mackintosh’s production of ‘Half A Sixpence’. Not only this, but the great singer and actress Petula Clark, now aged 86, is returning to play the Bird Woman after a 20-year absence from the stage.
This is a wonderful musical, and it will make a spectacular pre-Christmas event for our Members and their families. The stage production of Mary Poppins originally opened in 2004 and immediately won two Olivier Awards and an Evening Standard Award. The Tony Award-winning Broadway run was on for more than six years. This new production promises much.
The stage production of ‘Mary Poppins’ is brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by P L Travers and the original film. It is co-created by Cameron Mackintosh and has a book by Oscar-winning screenwriter and Downton Abbey creator, Julian Fellowes. It has a timeless score by Richard M Sherman and Robert B Sherman, including the classic songs ‘Jolly Holiday’, ‘Step in Time’, ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’ and ‘Feed the Birds’. New songs and additional music and lyrics include ‘Practically Perfect’, by Olivier award-winning Britons George Stiles and Anthony Drewe.
Mary Poppins boasts a creative team headed by stage and film director Richard Eyre, with co-direction and choreography by the brilliant Matthew Bourne and co-choreography by Stephen Mear. Set and costume design is by Bob Crowley with lighting design by Natasha Katz, sound design by Paul Gatehouse, with orchestrations by William David Brohn.
The great singer and actress Petula Clark will be returning to the stage for the first time in two decades to play the Bird Woman. Now aged 86, the internationally-known singer began her career aged nine, entertaining the troops in World War Two, and later danced with Fred Astaire on screen in Finian’s Rainbow. Cameron Macintosh says he is thrilled she has agreed to perform again—and he is hinting that Ms Clark will be ‘doing something extra’ in the show. To see Petula Clark live on stage again after all these years will be an unforgettable experience.
