Join us for a sell-out First Night: a Gala Ballet in London to celebrate the English National Ballet’s 70th Anniversary: Friday, January 17, 2020: sold out

£139.00

This is an unmissable ballet event, a spectacular non-stop programme of some of the most important, enjoyable and iconic works, dancers and choreographers which make up English National Ballet’s history and ground-breaking repertoire. They will be led by the great Sergio Bernal, considered the finest dancer of his era, and the remarkable prima ballerina Tamara Rojo
The First Night performance is Friday, January 17, 2020. We shall have best seats in the centre of the Dress Circle, and we shall open the evening with a delicious three-course Champagne Dinner at the Savoy Hotel.
We are delighted to open the new season with a spectacular Opening Night—the English National Ballet’s 70th Anniversary Gala. This will be an artistic achievement combined with joyous entertainment and wonderful classical dance and music. Classics of the Ballets Russes melt into extracts from the great masters—Balanchine, Petit, MacMillan and more—to create an astonishing, dream-like vision of 70 years of the English National Ballet.

This is a great time to celebrate the English National Ballet: ‘This is a company on flying form’, writes the Telegraph. ‘The English National Ballet is firing on all cylinders,’ applauds the Express.

The Gala First Night will open the new year with a glorious celebration of ballet, and ballet history in the making. In all this glory it will showcase the international Spanish star dancer Sergio Bernal, considered the finest young dancer of his era and winner of the prestigious Positano Dance Prize, previously won by Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn.
Only three Gala performances are scheduled, and they will be sold out—but we have secured centre seats in the Dress Circle to make sure our Members do not miss out—and you can choose the First Night to the following dauy’s Matinee and Evening performances, to the full—having first enjoyed a delicious Champagne Three-Course Dinner at The Savoy Hotel.
This will be a very special programme combining history, classical ballet and ballet greats such as Nureyev and Carlos Acosta, Dame Alicia Markova and Sir Anton Dolin, who founded the Company. Dominic Best, who directed BBC documentaries ‘Good Swan, Bad Swan: Dancing Swan Lake’ and ‘Giselle: Belle of the Ballet’, has created a film which will dissolve into live performance on stage, with extracts from such iconic works as Kenneth MacMillan’s masterpiece ‘The Sleeping Beauty’, Rudolf Nureyev’s ‘Romeo & Juliet’, created for HM The Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, August Bournonville’s ‘La Sylphide’, Ronald Pettit’s ‘Carmen’ and Akram Khan’s thrilling production of ‘Giselle’.
Leading the ballerinas will be Tamara Rojo CBE, former Royal Ballet star and now the Company’s creative director as well as first prima ballerina. As well as being astonishing on stage—she has been described by The New York Times as ‘the greatest dance actress of her generation’—she has been applauded for her artistic vision. With Rojo and Bernal will be Erina Takahashi—who ‘epitomises glittering, fairytale perfection’, and an array of talents: Fabian Reimair, Francesco Gabriele Frola, Jeffrey Cirio, James Streeter and Matthew Astley, Anjuli Hudson and the young American star, Precious Adams, ‘an exciting talent’. And there will be a performance of one of the Company’s signature pieces, ‘Etudes’ by Harald Lander, which they first performed in 1955.
All in all, this will be a must-be-there event. The price for our Members for the entire evening is only £139 per person, including centre Orchestra Stalls seats, a three-course Champagne Dinner at the Savoy Hotel, your taxi to the Coliseum, VAT and restaurant service charge. The full value of the evening is at least £180. (If you prefer to book for the performance without the Champagne dinner, the cost is only £xx per ticket.)
