Chic private hotel on the Left Bank in Paris: Hotel Chavanel, a hidden gem in fashionable Saint-Honoré: Exclusive Club rates
It is a pleasure to discover in a favourite city an artistic gem of an hotel of which hardly anybody has ever heard, but which makes you want to return again and again. We can all find the best five-star hotels—discovering a chic, private four-star which is interesting in its own right and which you can genuinely call your home in a smart street in the heart of a great city is a different matter. Which is why Hotel Chavanel, in the fashionable St-Honore district on the Left Bank, is such a find.
It was brought to our attention by the owner herself, Sophie Charlet-Melloul. She is not the usual hotelier: Hotel Chavanel was left to her by a relative—and this explains the style, and the care which she lavishes on every detail. It has a certain je ne sais quoi, as they say. It is also feminine without being fussy—fashionista, but sensible.
The lace patterns on the headboards were created by Sophie Hallette, who provided the lace for the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding dress—and the elegant lace patterning is echoed on the beautiful carpets, lacy lampshades and tiles. The throws are pure cashmere, the desks leather topped. There are bright colours contrasting muted hues. In the reception are some surprises—a copse of silver birch trees and a large birdcage. The resulting atmosphere is of a natural yet avant-garde style, original and individual, created in part by Sophie herself and by smart interior designers Peyroux & Thisy.
As to the all-important location, Hotel Chavanel stands in the elegant rue Tronchet, a wide, peaceful street between the smart shops of the Opera and Place Vendome and the department stores of the Grands Bouelvard. Its entrance is discreet, totally in keeping with the streetscape itself, and it has just 30 guest rooms. There is no real restaurant, but the delicious organic buffet breakfast is served in the stylish, vaulted basement, and nearby are all the brasseries and restaurants one could wish.Club
