There is a square in Salamanca which they call the ‘living room of Spain’, not only for its beauty but because Plaza Mayor is the meeting place for many student nationalities coming to this Unesco world heritage city to learn Castilian, Spain’s most popular dialect.
The attraction of learning Spanish in Salamanca is also that you are never far from a wonderful glass of wine—the city is on the famed ‘wine river’, Rio Duero, running through Spain and into Portugal, where its valley is home to some of the finest vineyards in the world. Minutes from Plaza Mayor, on the banks of a tributary of the Duero, lies Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel, a palatial converted Dominican monastery and vineyard founded in the 14th century. Seven hundred years of history are the background to a project, 10 years in the making, to restore it to its former glory as a place of renowned hospitality—hospitality which welcomed many notable figures, including one Christopher Columbus, who came here to plan his voyage to the New World. This is a fascinating place to stay, and Members are invited to experience true hacienda hospitality together with gourmet restaurants, a vinotherapy spa, wine tasting in the cellars and more.
There are 40 exclusive villas and rooms, each complete with wooden beams, exposed stone walls and an individual classic provençal armoire. Cotemporary luxuries are catered for with flat screen televisions, iPod docks and Nespresso machines.
Of course abundant uninterrupted views of either the river or the vineyard come as standard, as do private gardens and terraces for the villas. The beating heart of Hacienda Zorita however has to be the wine and food. The wines are from the Marques de la Concordia family wines collection, where nearly 1,400 bottles lay in American and French oak barrels in a cellar built as an homage to Columbus, the roof resembling an upturned ship’s hull.
The excellent restaurant is run by Michelin-starred chef Víctor Gutiérrez whose farm to table policy ensures an endless supply of exquisite fresh regional dishes supplied by produce from the hotel’s own organic farm. Clearly the Dominicans knew a thing or two about hospitality, something Hacienda Zorita Wine Hotel have had 700 years to perfect.
