The Hacienda has been in the Reid family for a century-and-a-half and until the Sixties it was a working olive farm. The youngest generation, Anthony and Patrick, run the Hacienda now—Patrick was a project manager at the Groucho Club in London, and Anthony organised safaris in Botswana. They have combined their skills to create a piece of the real Andalusia with style, class, history and charm.
Standing between Seville and the sherry capital of Jerez (25 miles to each), the Hacienda still has the look of the traditional white-painted 19th century cortijo it originally was, with its thick stone walls and floor-to-ceiling, wooden shuttered windows, but with more than a soupçon of added luxury. Being set in a 350-acre working farm—and still cultivating sunflowers and cotton—makes this centuries old former olive farm the perfect antidote to the stresses and strains of modern life.
The entrance is through a terracotta-paved courtyard amid a riot of orange bougainvillea. Communal areas and the 11 individual rooms and casitas—‘little houses’ which are in fact small thatched cottages—all feature a combination of rustic simplicity and modern luxury, complete with roomy marble bathrooms and antiques. The cuisine is simple, delicious and fresh, using produce from the area, and is a high point of a stay at the Hacienda, as is the Spa, which offers an array of treatments and experiences, from reiki and reflexology to aromatherapy, massage and yoga.
With all this, set in five acres of mature gardens with three infinity pools, as well as riding and tennis, the biggest challenge is finding the energy to leave.
